Picking up where I left off

Maybe, though I figure at that point there’s no room for a spare in the tub anymore at which point it becomes a dedicated trail rig. I would have to dwell on that for a while.
Just curious how open you are on the idea. Once you had a cell, you would only consider it a trail rig? Wouldn’t drive to and from as well as on the road whenever?

No, I think I could still make it work. If I could put the cell directly behind the front seats, then have the spare tire angled up (baja style) so that the cell is below it, I think that would workout the way I want and still allow me to drive it on the road.

I recall Blaine not liking the idea of a fuel cell in the tub (at least I think I recall him saying that), so I'd be curious to find out what the disadvantages are other than losing extra space in the tub.

Is the main concern just cargo space? I wouldn’t be opposed to losing that if it meant big performance gains elsewhere.

My only concern is I want to be able to keep the spare in the tub as well as the fuel cell. That’s really it. But if I were to go this route, I am definitely stretching the rear 5”.

Makes me curious why he doesn't like the cell. Are you opposed to the spare on the back? Another option would be a rack that sits right above the tank, that you could secure the wheel/tire to. Just some thoughts.

Don’t you have to deal with the filler tube issues and the gas smell when you move the fuel cell inside?

I’m still curious if the tire mounted in the tub makes that much of a performance gain. I really don’t know the answer to that. I don’t think he’s opposed to fuel cells for the right reasons. I think that’s the main way he prefers to stretch because too many compromises are made with stretch tanks.

Have you ever considered putting a fuel cell in the back and getting rid of the gas tank underneath the vehicle? That would definitely make your departures quite clean ;)

I have a couple long term thoughts about what to do back there.

Yes, the smell of fuel might deter me especially if it was a day where I had the top up and the doors on.

I don’t daily drive it, but I do still drive it on the road from time-to-time.

From two separate individuals with cells, they claim the only odor is during fill up. Afterwards there are no issues with odor. Of course if you spilled the fuel then yes there will be an odor.
