NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

Hate to say it, but that was the only logical place for it to leak from based on the factors. If it was leaking out of the input seal it would have been immediately obvious. Hope the next one goes better.

lol. I know, I know. That’s why I already ordered a replacement. But I was still pretending it might be something easier.

Might help to clean the gear’s bore out with a degreaser, put some RTV in the bore, install the bearing, and then any RTV that oozes out you smear around the perimeter to keep anything from getting through.

I am glad you mentioned that, I was wondering if something like that would work

Yeah I am going to do it like @machoheadgames suggested above. New bearing is supposed to get here today but works been busy so not sure if I can get to it before the weekend.

I was curious how the progress of the swap is going. I am looking at doing the swap with one of the 242s I have, not going with SYE yet. I have the shift gate and cable shifter, but was curious if you had to modify lengths of the drive shafts?

Sorry for the lack of updates. After 17 years with the same company I was laid off at the beginning of December. I had to put projects on hold. The market out there is ridiculous. I am used to interviewing for several positions and having multiple offers to choose from. I think it will change today, I have my 3rd interview with the same company in a couple of hours.

The transfer case is in and 100% functional. If I hadn’t done the SYE I would be driving it daily. But because of the SYE I need to have the shock mounts on my axle relocated so I can rotate the axle and order a new drive shaft. Until I complete that I can’t pass inspection and get plates.

I had to cut the shift gate, I needed more travel even with the 242 shift gate. I can’t remember if I posted that before. The front drive shaft fits fine. I can’t say for sure on the rear but I read that it would fit at factory length.

I have driven around in 4 High with no issues I just haven’t put too many miles on it since I don’t have plates

Thats always rough dealing with a job search. Hopefully things change soon!

So for the gate modification, did you only have to extend the stops further in 2wd and 4lo areas?

I thought I documented it better but I don't see anything in the thread so I guess not, I believe I modified almost every position, I am not sure why I had to, I didn't expect to have to since I was using the correct gate. Here is a pic I took after I trimmed and was able to shift into every position:

I spray painted the gate black before I realized I would have to cut so anywhere you see bare metal it was trimmed.

Seems easy enough, I appreciate the insight! Im hoping to do this first 242J swap on the cheap and only doing basic seals and I am building another 242J with 6 pinion, SYE and for a GM engine swap to go behind a 6L80 when I get to the swap.

Nothing to update, same as I posted a couple of months ago. Everything works, I am not driving much yet as I need to get plates and I can't do that till I pass the smog test. I can't take the smog test yet because I need to have the rear shock mount moved so I can rotate my axle because I installed the SYE when I rebuilt the 242. So for now I drive in 4 high. They won't know how to handle a front wheel drive TJ at the emissions place. I had someone lined up to do the welding for me in December but then I was laid off from my job. I just started working again but it will be a little while before I have Jeep funds. No job and no health insurance for 5 months, I need to dig myself out of a hole. My wife's meds were over $1500/month without insurance. Hopefully next month I can see if the guy can still move the shock mounts for me.

Keep plugging. totttttttttttallly get where ya coming from.... One Emergency Room visit bills for infected dog bite in May, now totals more than half my yearly SS income.

Hey yall so.....long story short,I want to do my savvy tummy tuck,a while ago I bought a T-case from the summit outlet foolishly thinking it was a Np231.....I have an SYE for a 231 from AA but that won't work on a 242🙃
What i have is an Np242 for up to an 04 Grand cherokee
1. From what im reading the clocking is no different since the clocking is on the Trans. For those jeeps?
2. I have a 42rle but got plans to move on to an AX15 within a year so I'd need to take the input shaft from my 231 and put it on the 242?
3. Would my savvy cable shifter work?So I'd just need to modify the shifter gate that's in the cabin?
4. From what I'm understanding the 242 handles more power because the main shaft is bigger ? That interests me alot! Cause what I thought was a hold up may not actually be😁?
5. Looks like I'd need to go with Tom woods for an SYE? I'd like to keep my speedo,I'm not using my phone !

I was gonna start disassembling this Tcase but realized it was a 242...

Peep the SYE in the back.....and the Rubicrawler 😉(not gonna be using it anytime soon)

Hey D, let me see what info I can provide to help. Everything I found was all over the place so hopefully this thread brings it all together.
1. Clocking is the same, Also, mine fit with my Savvy TT no problem.
2. All my experience is with the 3550. I am not sure (can't remember) if the AX15 or Auto use short or long. I ordered a long input shaft just because I wanted the additional engagement even though the short should have worked in my case. I also didn't want to take apart my 231s so I can sell them as complete units once I am satisfied with the 242 (or just keep them in the garage till I die with all the other jeep parts).
3. My Novak cable worked just fine and even says it is for both 231 and 242. I believe the Savvy is the same cable with a couple improvements. I assume it would work but I am not 100%
4. I believe the 231 has a slightly higher torque rating than the 242. I swapped in the 6 gear planetary from a Hummer to try to help.
5. Tom Woods was the only true SYE I could find, all the others were hack n tap. It's pretty beefy and I am sure helps with the strength. And yes, you keep your speedo.

I can confirm that the AX15 will work on a long or short. I believe the 42RLE uses a short from factory? But if you’re going AX15, anything 23 spline will work. They used short gears from the factory until around the beginning of 1998, and then went to long gears through at least the end of the 1999 AX15.

Thank you man! This is great news😁
So To get the 6 gear planetary would it be the from a 2005 ish Hummer?

That's great to hear,With the power I plan to push I'd probably get the longer input for peace in mind !
But that also means I'd have to take out the short input and put it on the 242? Or does 42rle not care like the Ax15?

That’s the thing, I’m not really sure if a 42RLE will accept all of them or not. I believe it’s stock with a short length but that’s just trying to pull it from memory. If it is short, I have no idea if a long will work or if it would bottom out.

Even with lots of power, I bet the short would be perfectly fine.
