NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

Well, it doesn't seem to be the transmission. I let it run for about 5 minutes with the 3550 output shaft spinning and not a drop

Now to just figure out where it's coming from in the t-case. You could put some dye in the t-case and use that to try and help diagnose it.

what did you use as a sealant between the two half of cases when putting back together? Had a 231 do that to me once.. didnt happen after we switched to a different sealant. That was 30yrs ago so not sure what we used second time.

The case halves are sealed good, it really seems like it’s coming out through the center of the input shaft. The input shaft seal does not appear to be leaking.

I think that means it’s the needle bearing cup

maybe you missed one needle?

Not those needle bearings I’m probably using the wrong term. It’s the cup that the main shaft sits in. I can’t think of any other place that would allow it to come through.

Looks like this:

is that the one that is NOT suppose to be seated all the way down? believe your suppose to leave a small gap from bottom. That hole in the case there feeds oil to it on that one.

you do know there is a weep hole at the rear bottom of the Tcase right? It's little deeper in from the bottom Passenger side stud

You are thinking of the caged bearing that sits in the rear case half. This one we’re talking about is in the input gear, where he’s leaking. The pocket bearing could theoretically be hammered all the way through the input gear and out the other side.

I actually emailed Novak to ask them specifically about how far this bearing was supposed to be installed. Ironically, I was worried I was going to fuck it up.

This was their response:
The cup bearing outer edge should be just flush with the bottom of the beveled edge in the gear.

The more I think about it, that bearing was such a tight fit. I can’t imagine How it could’ve possibly leaked there. I will pull the input retainer plate and see what I can see

yeah your right..... brain farted... caged bearing, went inside with the pulling tool to get it out... so duh... could not have been a pocket

you can find your old thread via Wayback Machine and save the text to a file. Pictures will be there but wont enlarge. If you still have the original pics or videos on your computer you can then re-insert them in the doc file you create. I can help with that if you need.

Thanks for the links guys,

Rest assured, if there are any issues with our products, we want to know about it and we will fix them.

It looks like most people are referencing an old design from many years back. We've been in business since 1967, and we are always improving.

We always encourage people to give us a call since we are stateside: 435-753-2513

Hate to say it, but that was the only logical place for it to leak from based on the factors. If it was leaking out of the input seal it would have been immediately obvious. Hope the next one goes better.
