Detroit finally has a RoboCop statue

Nearly 15 years later, Detroit finally has its statue of RoboCop.

The bronze statue depicting the eponymous cybernetic star of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 set-in-Detroit sci-fi satire was installed in Eastern Market on Wednesday, nearly 15 years after someone proposed it in a viral social media post.

Back in 2011, someone with the Twitter account @MT (no, not us) tweeted at then-Mayor Dave Bing that Detroit should have a statue of the part-man, part-machine cop because “Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky & RoboCop would kick Rocky’s butt.”

“He’s a GREAT ambassador for Detroit,” the tweet continued.

The idea got even more attention after Bing’s office responded to it. “There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop,” Bing tweeted at the time. “Thank you for the suggestion.”

Nevertheless, a fan named Brandon Walley launched a crowdfunding effort which eventually raised more than $60,000. A statue was commissioned and constructed by George Gikas of Venus Bronze Works, though the project became mired in years of setbacks and red tape.

But now, RoboCop stands tall outside of 3434 Russell St. in Detroit.

You can learn more about Detroit’s RoboCop statue in our 2021 cover story.

Yeah, well, Philly also burns and pillages their own city when their sports teams win a championship. Just because someone else is doing something doesn't mean it's a good thing... :sneaky:

A married one-time “teacher of the month” in Kansas is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student — including multiple times in the backseat of her Jeep.

Art teacher Nicole Hernandez, 30, also known as Nikki Baird, allegedly groomed the boy she’d first met in a middle school before both moved to Wichita North High School, according to an affidavit seen by the Wichita Eagle.

“He described how she befriended him, then isolated him from others” before the relationship allegedly turned sexual in early 2024, the affidavit stated.

The physical contact “started as Baird touching or rubbing his back or shoulders,” before she began forcing him to give her hugs, according to the affidavit.

Baird told the boy “her marriage was struggling” and gave him her personal cell number, the affidavit said.

She also sent love letters, and “One letter said, ‘I hope and pray one day I get the chance to be with you’ and ‘I know that I love you,'” according to the affidavit.

By the teen’s senior year, Baird allegedly started meeting him off school grounds, even getting his mom’s approval to go on a trip to an arts center, where she held his hand for the first time, the documents state.

At school, the physical contact allegedly escalated, with Baird kissing the teen on the neck during their hugs and repeatedly asking him “if he wanted her to kiss him,” according to the affidavit.

“He was nervous and eventually said yes,” the affidavit states.

Baird told the boy to “act normal” and keep their relationship a secret, the student told investigators.

She allegedly invited him into her office three times during his last week of school, ordering him to touch her while “saying things to encourage him to continue touching her,” the affidavit states.

On graduation night, Baird allegedly asked the victim if he wanted to have sex in her car, after telling him to meet her in a random street, according to documents.

“The student said he was nervous and felt pressured,” the affidavit reads.

Baird allegedly told the still-underage student it was “okay,” and said that they “won’t get in trouble because he graduated,” the affidavit states.

Afterward, she offered the boy alcohol, which he refused.

Later, while classes were still in session but seniors were no longer in class, Baird allegedly would meet up with the student up to four times a week to have sex in the backseat of her Jeep, according to the affidavit.

Baird also allegedly texted the boy nude photos, some of which he later showed investigators, along with the love notes.

The teen eventually cut off the relationship with Baird, but she allegedly continued to show up at his place of work, once leaving candy on his car while it was parked in his driveway.

A grandfather and granddaughter were mauled by pitbulls on East Warren Street late Wednesday afternoon.

According to a press release sent by District Attorney General Craig Northcott, the Coffee County Communications Center received a call at approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, regarding the "apparent mauling by pitbulls" of James Alexander Smith, 50 and an infant later identified as Smith's three-month-old granddaughter at East Warren Street.

"Tullahoma Police Department immediately arrived at the scene and observed the pitbulls actively mauling the infant," Northcott said. "The dogs were killed to stop the attack. Regrettably, it was obvious that both victims were deceased."

Northcott continued and said the investigation is currently ongoing to determine the cause of death of the individuals, whether the mauling was postmortem, past violent history with these or other dogs in the home, current or past issues related to the children requiring intervention by the Department of Children's Services and other potential issues that may have contributed to this situation.

"No decisions have been made at this time as to what, if any, criminal charges are appropriate," he stated.

He added that the dogs involved in the mauling have been euthanized, and the other dogs in the home have been taken into the possession of Tullahoma Animal Control to determine the appropriate action to be taken.

"This was an especially difficult and brutal scene," Northcott said. "Please pray for the family of the victims in this difficult time, as well as the first responders, as they cope with the trauma from what they witnessed."

The investigation is being led by Inv. Jessica Taylor of the Tullahoma Police Department and being overseen directly by Tullahoma Police Chief Chase Sons and Deputy Chief Jason Kennedy.

Anyone with information regarding this situation are asked to contact either Taylor at (931) 455-0530, or Inv. Jason Williams or Inv. James Sherrill with the District Attorney's office at (931) 723-5055.

To go along with that story;

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. (WTVF) — An infant and grandfather, identified as 50-year-old James Alexander Smith died Wednesday afternoon after being attacked by at least seven dogs inside a home on East Warren Street in Tullahoma, according to the Coffee County Sheriff's Office.

The neighbor said word began to spread about what happened inside the home.

"We started hearing that the two dogs that attacked two family members and killed them," he said. "We had no idea that anything like this would ever happen here. It's just horrible."

Not just some random pitbull. "At least seven dogs inside the home". Why, why that many dogs inside a house, and why did those damn fools have a baby around them? I like dogs, I have dogs, but why are some people so stupid?
