Fighter jet slips off the hangar deck of a US aircraft carrier in the Red Sea, one minor injury

Apr 28, 2025, 11:59 AM | Updated: 12:08 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — An F/A-18 fighter jet slipped off the hanger deck of an aircraft carrier deployed to the Middle East, as sailors were towing the aircraft into place in the hangar bay of the USS Harry S. Truman on Monday, the Navy said.

The crew members who were in the pilot seat of the Super Hornet and on the small towing tractor both jumped out before the jet and the tug went into the Red Sea. According to a defense official, the sailor who jumped from the aircraft sustained a minor injury. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss personnel details.

“The F/A-18E was actively under tow in the hangar bay when the move crew lost control of the aircraft. The aircraft and tow tractor were lost overboard,” the Navy said in a statement. The jet was part of Strike Fighter Squadron 136.

Fighter jets are routinely towed around the hangar deck to park them where they are needed for any flight operations or other work. It is unclear whether there will be an effort to recover the jet, which costs about $60 million. The incident is under investigation.

"A Florida nurse was allegedly caught by her husband having sex with his 15-year-old son following weeks of reported seduction and has now lost her medical license, according to a report.

Alexis Von Yates, 35, had her single-state nursing license revoked last week as she awaits criminal trial for last July's alleged statutory rape of the minor who was visiting his father in Ocala, Fla., for summer vacation, Law & Crime reported."

A 60-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for having 153 images of child pornography.

A Blount County judge on Tuesday sentenced Jody Lane Crawford on the possession of obscene matter convictions. Crawford also received a year and a day for possession of a controlled substance.

..

According to the indictment, Crawford had digital files with names including phrases like “illegal preteen underage”, “preteen (expletive)”, “10yo-boys-suck”, “little (expletive)”, “young naked little girl”, “child incest” and others.

..

One of the videos showed a prepubescent female blindfolded and bound and a dog that was taking part in the sex act.

“Unfortunately, and sadly, as prosecutors, we can become accustomed to seeing a certain level of depravity in our line of work. Occasionally, someone comes along and moves the bar to a new level,” Casey said. “This case has raised the bar. The level of sexual deviance and depravity in these images is incomprehensible.”

Casey went on to say that it was not a victimless crime.

“Over 100 children are depicted in these images,” she said. “The very thought of a 5-year-old girl being tied to a bed and forced to engage in sexual acts with a grown man and a dog makes me sick and my heart hurt.”

“It will keep you up at night,” Casey said.

Speeding in Virginia? Not for Long, as New Tech To Enforce Speed Limits Introduced

The state is the first in America to mandate Intelligent Speed Assist systems, following implementations in Washington, D.C., and the European Union.

Speeding scofflaws in Virginia are about to lose their ability to floor it whenever the urge presents itself. State lawmakers have greenlit a new plan that uses cutting-edge technology to prevent drivers from revving their engines on the open road.

The commonwealth is borrowing a page from Washington, D.C., by forcing habitual traffic offenders to have Intelligent Speed Assist systems — which prevent them from accelerating over the speed limit — installed in their cars.

Virginia is the first state in the nation to officially sanction ISA systems, though others are considering them, including California, Georgia, Maryland, and New York, according to Fast Company.

“It’s really growing much more rapidly than we anticipated,” a co-founder, Amy Cohen, of a national advocacy group in favor of the various ISA bills, Families for Safe Streets, told the magazine.

The ISA technology, which can be installed while the car is on the assembly line or as an after-market accessory, uses GPS to determine the speed limit on a particular segment of road and then deters drivers from exceeding it in one of two ways — by using either a “passive” system that merely warns drivers or an “active” system that stops the driver from getting more from the gas pedal after the speed threshold is reached.

I hate driving in VA. I've had the misfortune, several times, to be pulled over for speeding. Ironically, I was in a pack of cars speeding, but I was the only out of state plate.

A few years ago, VA changed the law. Speeding is no longer a civil offense, but a criminal offense. At some point, you "must appear" and possibly go to jail. There was an article years ago in Road&Track or Car& Driver magazine, where the guy testing a new Corvette or Camaro was pulled over doing 93 MPG. He was sentenced to 3 days in jail. One day for every MPH over 90.

Great. This is going to be a disaster. There is a portion of I-95 in my state that parallels US-1 (a non highway road) Google Maps is constantly warning me that I am exceeding the speed limit on I-95 because it thinks I am on US-1. I-95 speed limit is 65-70mph US-1 in that area is 45-50mph depending. This system would cause someone to drive 45 mph on the highway. Virginia has a ton of roads like this especially on I-81

GPS speed limit database is horridly inaccurate or up to date.

Ditto that. I'd like to see them try it on the old MBZ.

Aye, but it'll be a cinch to implement on these new driving appliances. ;) I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a way for some of them to be shut down remotely as it is, designed in.

I'm all in favor of law enforcement having a way to shut down a vehicle during a dangerous high speed chase, or a way to track it so they can drop back and wait for it to stop somewhere.

But limiting acceleration to the speed limit for everyday drivers could turn out to be a safety issue in some cases. Sometimes you need that little extra punch to get around a slow vehicle on a 2 lane. Then there's the issue of someone being pursued by a bad guy and can't get away, or someone in immediate need of medical help being rushed to a hospital. It will be interesting to see how this one turns out.

It would be nice if they could come up with a way to make people stop at red lights and crosswalks where I live, even the HAWK crossings get ignored. On Monday there was an old man crossing with his walker, traffic had the red, he had the walk signal, all six lanes were stopped when a small pickup 3 or 4 cars back swerved into the shoulder and blew past everyone then swerved to miss the old man. Those kind of drivers need a good beating IMO.

Anyone ever been behind governed commercial carriers trying to pass each other on the interstate… y’all might be collaterally involved.

Oh yeah that too. Like the TT doing 65 MPH passing the slowpoke only doing 64.999 MPH?

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WKYT) - A Kentucky man who claimed a $167M lottery prize earlier this week is now in a Florida jail.

James Farthing of Georgetown was taken into custody early Wednesday morning in Pinellas County for assault on an officer.

Farthing won Saturday’s $167 million lottery jackpot. He purchased the ticket at Clark’s Pump N Shop in Georgetown. WKYT interviewed him on Sunday. On Monday, he posed for photos with the celebratory check. By Wednesday morning, he was incarcerated.

His arrest citation says Farthing was at a hotel Tuesday night when an officer tried to intervene in an altercation.

The victim claims Farthing punched him with a closed fist. The arresting officer says that Farthing kicked him in the face. The officer also said Farthing refused to comply with his orders and resisted arrest.

Farthing is charged with battery of a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer and battery as well as violating parole.

Farthing was on parole through August 2025 for charges in Kentucky. His court records include convictions of tampering with evidence, engaging in organized crime, drug charges, receiving stolen property and theft by unlawful taking.

Jail records show he has $295 on his commissary account.

Farthing bought the $2 Powerball ticket for last Saturday’s drawing and ended up making Kentucky lottery history with the largest prize ever awarded.

He was set to split the winnings with his mother, Linda Grizzle. She said it would be used to pay off debt.

“It’s going to be a good Mother’s Day,” she said.

The pair had the choice of receiving 30 annual payments or take the cash option of $77.3 million.

Girlfriend was arrested too.

(LEX 18) — 50-year-old Kentucky Powerball jackpot winner James Farthing has been charged with battery on a law enforcement officer after he allegedly kicked a Florida police officer in the face during a bar fight, according to arrest affidavits.

According to the affidavits, Farthing and his girlfriend, 42-year-old Jacqueline Fightmaster, were both arrested on Tuesday after the reported fight at TradeWinds Resort at St. Pete Beach, just days after Farthing won the jackpot at a Clark's Pump N Shop in Georgetown.

An arrest affidavit states that around 11 p.m., during an argument, Farthing allegedly punched a hotel guest in the face and then kicked the Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputy in the face during the fight.

The deputy was reported to have swelling and redness on the right side of his face under his eye, according to the affidavit. The affidavit also says that after kicking the deputy in the face Farthing attempted to flee the scene, but was unsuccessful at doing so.

According to the affidavit in addition to being charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, a felony, Farthing was also charged with a "pair of misdemeanors." The article also says that his girlfriend was charged with public intoxication, as documents allege that she was "very intoxicated and was yelling, screaming and making incoherent statements." An affidavit also reports that police documents reveal that Fightmaster allegedly wanted to fight with other customers at the bar.

Documents show that Fightmaster has been released, but Farthing is still in jail, and he is being held without bond on a parole violation out of Kentucky.
