Need input on selling my TJ

I've sold lots of used vehicles over the years in all kinds of economies and the one thing that sells them fast and for top dollar is having them in full retail condition. No damage, no rust, no major paint flaws and spotlessly clean. Everything must work. The buyers pool may be small right now but it is not zero.

I very recently sold 2 of my vehicles, both in perfect condition and prior to sale spent a week on each one detailing. Fixed all paint chips, buffed and waxed, detailed engine bays etc. If you're going to try for top dollar they'd better look perfect. I wrote my ads carefully explaining how over the years I kept them up with the intent of keeping them forever. I made sure my ads were 100% grammatically correct, an ad that looks like a grade school dropout wrote it loses credibility. Since both vehicles were perfect I didn't need to put in things like "It just needs" or "as is typical with these", I could honestly put "Everything works". 100% rust free is also a good selling point on these.

Even though I expected to wait weeks or months in this economy, the results were I sold them both for more than full retail, each one to the very first person to show up. One sold in less than 24 hours and the other sold in 8 days. The pickup sold for thousands over high retail, the car for several hundred over high retail.

There are some buyers out there, you are looking for the ones with cash who have been patiently watching for what you have. A hard to find cream puff may sell for well over book to someone who really wants it. Here in the Southwest the older a truck or 4x4 becomes, the less applicable book prices become.

Yeah right now $3000 in my area buys you a rusty shitbox with no wheels. I think a lot of stuff is sit

My little shitbox still runs, it just doesn't want to start half the time, and pops and sputters when I try to start it. Two minutes later it starts fine. Throwing camshaft/crankshaft codes even after replacing them. I believe the mice got into the wiring. 🤔

I'm not even a creampuff type buyer (too poor) but if you're an illiterate or don't speak the same language as me I am not interested in buying anything from you. An easily avoidable headache IMO. I see so many terribly written ads and it's like, who would trust you to maintain a vehicle if you can't even write a few sentences correctly on a device that offers spell and grammar checking??

That sucks, those are good little cars. My buddy's dad has an identical one (same color and everything) and I just put a water pump on it for him...it has over 350k on it. It might need a clutch soon though (manual trans). It's a tank, he has hit probably 3 deer with it and just keeps patching it back together, it keeps the mileage off his Jeep.

I honestly just assume those ads are scams and ignore them.

Yep, text speak, bad abbreviations, etc, etc. Or they only want contact via text or some other PHOOOOOONNE bullshit. If I can't call you or email you, fuck off. And why isn't that "cheap and easy fix" been done already?

My next door neighbor bought a 200x Nissan something or other for $1,000 with 85K on it. The paint has the usual clear coat problems, but it otherwise looks pretty good. No "technology" which at least doubles its value as far as I'm concerned. Runs fine...

Yeah "cheap and easy fix" or "just needs an O2 sensor". My recent favorite was an ad for a Ford 6.0 PowerStroke that said "check engine light is on but not for bad head gaskets".

Lots of illegals around here selling Jeeps and other vehicles. I know for a fact that Hector and Omar don't own the Jeeps, so I avoid those ads. 🤫 🇺🇸

I told my brother to avoid those people... He didn't because it was such a good deal. Well, guess who got a title to a different VIN!!

My sister and her BF live outside of Baltimore. His brother was selling an ATV on Marketplace and met a guy in a public plaza type area. They ended up robbing him at gun point (it was a group of guys, probably 3 or 4) and they stole his truck, trailer, and ATV. The truck and trailer were recovered a few days later.

🤔
$6,000
1997 XJ Jeep Cherokee, White, 4WD, automatic transmission, 4.0L V6 Everything works BUT it does have a blown head gasket that will need to be replaced. Clean title, no accidents, 105,964 original miles, minimal rust.

Wow at least they are honest I guess lol. Up here that would be "rust free, perfect condition. $11000 no low balls I know what I got, this is a Southern Jeep never abused no rust".

My wife used to worry about me meeting strangers to buy Jeeps and carrying large amounts of cash with me. Then, I pointed out the fact that I always carry firearms with me. A self-defense excuse would be a bonus. 🤫

I don't even feel safe driving where they live, I would never meet someone to sell something without carrying. The crazy thing is his brother showed me where the plaza was, it was a pretty active public place, lots of traffic and stores/restaurants/cameras. They didn't care apparently.
