Need Emotional Support

$500 would have paid for a flight and hotel to check it out first. Bought mine 800 miles away in Co. PO held it until the weekend. Wife and I flew up gave it a look over, made the deal and the wife got a bonus shopping trip to Denver. My Son and I drove up the next week and picked it up. FYI always look up the VIN it will tell you where it was first delivered to. In my case I wanted to make sure it was a true Rubicon and not just decals. Mine was originally sold in Wy.
I’m sure you’ll have a ton of fun with it.

Yep, and the worst part is I own a Condo on the West Coast of Florida. If I had been patient I could have waited a month. The wife and I already have plans for April. I fucked up.

Show pics of the frame and underbody. Get inside of the frame and feel around for rust flakes. Hopefully it isn't toast 🤞

Also learn about antirust coatings like fluidfilm

So I had a chance to get underneath it today. So far the frame looks good. No Rot!! There is some scaling, but it looks like the previous owner did a spring wire brush and primer each year. whew. I'm feeling better. I'll send some pics tomorrow.

It's a real rubicon. Dana 44s front and back, locking hubs

Thankfully , I married the love of my life 41 years ago ! The Jeep count is 4 XJ's and 2 TJ's since 1992 .

Married 32 years this month. Jeep count 1955 Willy’s pickup, 1957 Willy’s wagon, 1987 YJ, 2006 LJR, 2015 JKUR. The last two I still have. To stop my wife from stealing my Jeep’s all the time had to buy her one, 2015 JKU 😂

So I finally had my Rubicon delivered from Florida. What a disaster. Turns out it isn't a Florida vehicle, the Paper work and title that arrived the day after the Jeep says it was from Connecticut, where I live. If I wanted rust issues I would have bought something up here. Then When I started it the power steering wasn't working. Turns out the Hydraulic Balancer was rotted out at the center and the belt was flopping all over. My mechanic hooked me up and did the job for 500, but still a bummer.

So, then I get it home and begin to really check it out. Found serious rust at the bottom of the windshield frame in three spots, so that will be some wire brushing and paint. Then I found more rust coming through the hood. The paint on this thing is so dry its like sand paper.

I feel like such a fool buying something site unseen. The dealer had sent me like 40 pictures of everything, and it looked so clean. I think he used old pictures from when the owner was trying to sell it years ago.

On the bright side I it does have 65k miles on it. The engine is clean and runs great. The frame seems solid, but I know more when I really get under it this weekend.

I paid 15k for the Jeep and 900 for delivery. Feel like I got duped. Then to make matters worse my wife had to remind me that she told me not to trust a dealership a thousand miles away. lol

You can probably find a frame the same color, better fold that thing down and see if it’s in the tub too.

The love of my life divorced me after 45 years, she's going on her third month in rehab, How'd that work for you honey?

My first wife never went to rehab (she needed to). I made it 2.5 years before I moved out while she was at work. Best thing I ever did. Worst thing I ever did was continue to think marriage works for me.

They can't lie about where the vehicle was titled. That comes from the various state motor vehicle authorities.

This is true, and probably the most helpful part of a CarFax or similar report, just knowing where's it's been registered.

I had a 2015 4Runner that l loved, but it got crushed by a tree in my driveway a few years back in 2017 when it only had ~16K miles on it during a storm. Insurance wouldn't total it despite my begging because they hold their values so well, repairs took months including pulling the engine, entire interior, cutting out the entire roof and firewall, door skins etc, putting rest back, a poor paintjob and calling it good. The entire upper console/sunroof assembly fell down on me on the test drive, dashboard was lit up like a Christmas tree. Returned immediately, Toyota dealer shop did all the repairs, so made dealer swap it out for a new Tacoma valued similar to what the 4Runner was worth pre-damage. They agreed just to end the painful process and knew I would never leave them alone because that 4Runner was forever screwed.

That's a lot of words to say I drive by this dealer on my way to work, and what do I see sitting on their Pre-Owned lot but my old 4Runner with a "Certified Pre-owned" balloon on the antenna about a week later. None of the above showed up on a CarFax because insurance didn't report, dealer didn't report it, and since it wasn't involved in an accident there was no police/highway patrol report ever filed that CarFax would have flagged. Still annoys me to this day.

Sorry for the wall of worlds, just tend to lean more @ChadH way when it comes to vehicle history reports. But they are helpful for registrations and reports mileage checks over the years, just not much else.

Wow that’s crazy, but carfax is still better than nothing I guess.?

The older I get the better feel I have for who to trust- until I do.

I want to trust people, I really do. Sickens me it is so dangerous to do that.

A friend for decades did a tile job for my company - cost us 40,000.00

I trusted an “Elite” shop to build a jeep- this week, 3 years later, the court awarded me back my money.

I loaned a fellow contractor $20,000.00, on a 7 day no interest agreement. 6 weeks later I’ve not seen a dime and wonder if I will, ever. Turns out he is on the edge of bankruptcy.

My thought is if you did not make he right decision, make the decision right.

Fix what needs fixed and enjoy it, or return the jeep and sue, or fix what needs fixed and sell it- it is likely a jewel in your market as it is.

All the best,
Andy

Depends on what you’re looking for and if folks worked under the radar.

During undergrad, I bought a motorcycle up in Santa Rosa that had a clean title and looked fine on the reports I bought, but it ended up having stolen engine. Thinking quick on my feet, I asked the CA officers who took the bike to ask State Farm to sell the engine to me for $0 since they already wrote off the loss, my title was clean, and bc it would cost them more to remove and sell the engine than they would get back in a sale. State Farm agreed and I got the bike back.

The ppl responsible were part of a big Bay Area ring that modified the engine numbers and changed things in the DMV database. They went to prison.

While that’s an extreme example, it’s not difficult for normal folks to have minor or major issues fixed at home or at a shop without ever reporting it to the insurance (so it won’t be reported to the carfax). Carfax is so severely limited that I consider their marketing and services to be scammy and disingenuous.

Hey Andy can I “borrow” $20k?

Glad you finally got your money back from the shop. Sorry to hear about the other stuff. Sucks when ppl you trust let you down.

Keep moving forward , we have all struggled with some sort of issue . you are correct saying " make the decision right " !

No mistakes... only lessons. Some more costly than others.

Between the CarFax and the images you had what you needed. All digital images have Metadata burned. The EXIF data tells you the date and location the image was created (along with tons of other shit). It should still be there. Most folks don't know enough to remove it and I doubt a dealership would go through the effort.. unless they were trying to hide something.

If you don't know how to find it, send me a few pics. I'll let you know what's there.
I tried my best and failed. The 20 Jeeps cost WAY less to buy and maintain though. 🥳
p.s. I have a used wife that I've had for 11 years now. FOR SALE AS IS. 🤫
Got any documentation on her.. like a CarFax kinda. or something?
😂
