Knocking from bell housing

Hello all. I have a '99 with the 4 banger and manual gearbox. It has a knocking that sounds like lifters. Well, I wandered to the parts store and grabbed new ones. Easy job but upon startup, the knock was still there. Turns out it is coming from the bell housing. What could that be? Thanks for any insight into this annoyance.

Can you stick a borescope in? Maybe past the fork?

One way or another it sounds like you're pulling that AX-5. Might as well do a clutch kit while you're in there and check seals on the transfer case and transmission.

Any possibility it's the starter? Pull the starter and roll start it to eliminate it as a possibility?

The starter is fine and the borehole isn't an option. I suppose you're right in me having to yank the gearbox out. I'll update soon on what I find.

How loud? Just at idle or?
My '98 with 204K on it has a slight knock at idle - don't think it's lifters. If it gets louder I'll worry about it.
