Novak Conversions Jeep Wrangler TJ radiator

Justin's TJ

The tail lights arrived, although 2 days late. FedEx dropped the ball twice in back-to-back days in delivering them. I contacted the sales rep I used to work with when I was shipping manager, and he helped get things straightened out. At any rate, these things are a work of art, attention to detail is top-notch. I debated between the black anodized and the raw aluminum housings. Savvy claims that the "Mil-Spec" anodizing doesn't fade. While that was a concern, it came down to availability. The black housings were on backorder, so raw it was. I actually like the look with the aluminum corners. I feel that they compliment each other well.

The sliders came in right on time last Monday. That evening I test fit them and marked where the holes would need to be drilled in the body and then took them to be sandblasted at IPA sand blasting in Provo. He is quick and does the blasting for a decent price. I've had him do axle housings, control arms, bumpers, etc. He is usually same day if you can get it to him early enough in the morning. While there when he was doing my axles, he explained that the guys from Bitchin' Rides have brought stuff to him to be blasted. Kinda cool.

After I got them home I hung them in my paint area for 4ish coats of Steel-It.

Installing the lights went straightforward. I wired them while watching Dennis @ Teraflex flop Slimer on Hanging Tree one night after work. When it came time for install, it was just a matter of plugging them in and checking that they were working properly. I did have to get an LED compatible flasher relay. Superbright LED's said that the 01-06 TJ flasher would work with a 2000 TJ, THEY WERE WRONG. The 01+ flasher is a 5 pin unit, and the older TJ's are 4. I did some research online and found the correct one needed. Fortunately O'Reilly's had one in stock so I grabbed it and installed it.

The sliders initially installed easily. Barnes 4wd explained that there was no modification to body mounts for the sliders to be installed, but when I went to install the 4 rearward body mounts the gaps were so large that I couldn't even start the bolts. I ended up cutting my body mount spacers where the sliders installed .5" shorter to account for the additional height provided by the sliders. Ideally I would have used a band saw, but all I had immediately available was a c-clamp to hold the puck and a 4.5" angle grinder with a cutoff wheel. Not ideal, but I made it work. Once the body mounts were cut, and cleaned up with a flap disc, install went quickly.

Yesterday I drove down to Price, UT to run Pinnacle 1. I already made good use of the new sliders. Everything seems to be working well.

What tail lights are those?

This week's updates:

Sold the NV3550 locally earlier this week. I was surprised it sold so fast, I didn't imagine there was much of a market for TJ transmissions.

Ordered a trans temp gauge from Speedhut. I wanted a gauge that would closely match the OE gauges, and I think this matches my gauges well.

I will be adding a trans crossmember when I re-assemble everything. I am using the Barnes4wd crossmember mounting kit, using some tube I have laying around.

I ordered a new radiator with the trans cooler built-in. I am told that some manual TJ's had the radiator with the trans cooler already in, but mine does not. I opted for a brass CSF radiator from RockAuto. Today, the PCM was shipped to WranglerFix to have it flashed for torque converter lockup.

Picked up the transmission from the transmission shop. It came with a 12 mo/12,000m warranty. Didn't take much for the bill to add up!

Now, I am focusing on trans coolers. I've seen a lot of discussion of the Setrab one Blaine uses, so that may be the route I go, just working to educate myself before making a decision.

The Setrab works great for those of us who need more cooling for a hotter running 42RLE. If you haven’t asked him yet, I’d ask Blaine about this because you may not need (or want) a Setrab for cooling a 32RH.

Yesterday’s efforts weren’t very fruitful regarding the transmission swap. Spent more time than I care to admit just looking for parts I had misplaced.

I decided to tackle the install of @sunnysideup_lj ‘s hood catch plate. Took me about 15 minutes which included looking for my leftover rivets from the inner fender install. Looks great and is a better overall improvement vs the previous cracked plastic one.

That’s a good call. I’ll have to see what he says.

How much further were you able to stretch the front axle when you installed the Curries?

Looks like you ended up with new upper coil/shock mounts this time around along with Jk lower mounts centered on the axle? And obviously a new frame side track bar mount.

Genright twisted pitman worked as intended and no need to move the steering box?

What did your total wheelbase end up being?

Looks great, I love the rear corner cut you did versus the “normal” round cut most do, works well with the genright front fender angles.

I've got somewhere between 4.5" and 5" stretch in the front. I do have aftermarket frame brackets, but they are in the stock location. I modified some Artec Fabricator coil mounts, to position the center of the coil about 2.5" behind the centerline of the axle. The stretch isn't exclusive to the Currie 60's, I am wrapping up a front stretch more or less identical to mine with a Tera 44.

You are right on the frame side track bar mount. I modified a Barnes 4WD track bar bracket and pushed is as far forward as I could without contact the GR Twisted Pitman arm. The steering box remains in the factory location. My wheelbase is 105".

Thank you regarding the wheel well cutouts. I like how they turned out and are a bit different / uncommon.

Thanks for the answers! Any chance you could post some pics of the front end from a few different angles. Seems like the simplest way I’ve seen yet to get that much stretch. Actually surprised it all fits without moving the steering box!

Right on, thanks for the pics, was just wanting to see how all the parts lined up/came together. Was mostly curious on the stock steering box, the pitman arm and the track bar.

My daughter is graduating high school in 2 weeks and heading off to college, she’s leaving her TJ Rubi at home for the first year and I’ve been debating doing a stretch on it while it’s sitting in the garage not being driven. Would like to do 5-6” in the rear and 2-3” in the front and end up on 37’s or 38’s. The way you did the front seems pretty straight forward. We’ve got a JLU Rubi on 37’s that’s wheeled all over Colorado, Moab, Sand Hollow, the Rubicon, etc and have had zero issues with the axles, thinking of swapping them into the kids TJ with some chromo shafts/trusses/gears/etc and putting some 1 tons under the JLU, 2 birds with 1 stone kinda thing!

Currently it’s got a 3.5” short arm, armor all the way around, 5.13’s, 35’s, etc on a stock wheelbase and does really well but would love the extra stability for the climbs!

I have a few questions regarding your setup. What axle side TB mount is that? I may have missed it but what is the width on your axles? Did you bend the TB and were you able to get the drag link and TB parallel and roughly same length with this setup? Looks really good and similar to what I plan on doing.

@RkyMtnTJ, here are a few more pics specifically of those parts you mentioned.

The axle side TB mount is Dave's Offroad Supply. The axles are JK spec Currie HD60's. JK width, outer knuckles, etc. I did not bend the TB, it is straight. The bars are very close to parallel as well as near the same length. I do not notice any significant adverse steering characteristics.

Just returned from a trip to Sand Hollow. You might see another forum member's rig in some of the pics. The trip was great, we had 8 rigs at one point come along and for the first time in a long time TJ's and LJ's outnumbered the newer rigs.

We're talking about doing Sand Hollow next year instead of Moab... Looks like a blast...
