So this is my second tj. I had an 01 wrangler patriot blue sport and got rear ended by a guy going like 50 into a stoplight. Anyway totaled it out. Just bought this green beauty for 5k. It has 78xxx miles on it and is completely bone stock except for the radio. I live in nj and things get pretty rusty up here but surprisingly the frame only has surface rust and the body has like 0% rust. I’m very very pleased with it and I really wanna put some mods on her. Anyway what is a good way to hit the surface rust on the frame. I got some navel jelly and a nice wire brush and I was just gonna go to town on it and then spray it with some undercoating... any recommendations? Anything would be appreciated. Thank guys. “JJ”

Looks like a nice find from the rust belt! Does it seem like it was maintained (fluids, etc) well?

Lots of threads already on treating rust. Pro tip: when you search the site, the Google search tab in the results is often better than the built in one.

Skip the undercoating. Unless you want the rust to stay safely hidden from view as it rots through your TJ. Get it as rust free as possible and stick with a Cosmoline product or Fluid Film. They allow you to monitor the condition of your steel and allow you to repair or re-clean any rust that comes back. And in the salt belt it always comes back.
