Is this a 4.0 engine?

I bought a 2004 a couple of weeks ago and have since found out the seller lied to me about a couple of things. It cost me a lot of money in repairs. Part of it is my fault for being naive and trusting.

So here is the question. Is this a 4.0 engine? He said it was but now I am dubious of everything he said. I tried looking for spark plugs to count but not sure if I see them.

Yeah, that looks like a 4.0. The plugs are under that rail next to the valve cover on the passenger side. That year doesn't use conventional plug wires.

How many injectors do you see? How many intake runners do you see? How many exhaust ports are there? What does the sticker on the underside of the hood say with regard to the emissions compliance for that year?

Don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask a question of something you are not sure of. The majority of those on this site are willing to help or offer advice. What other things did the previous owner lie about that cost you money? Discussing this may help someone else from going down the same path. Plenty of scam artists out there taking advantage of the naive.

An easy way to find out some stuff like that is by interpreting your VIN number.

It will at least tell you what the vehicle had at stock. Of course, between when it rolled off the dealer lot for the first time and when it changed hands from the previous owner, plenty can change, but it can still be helpful to know. You can also look at the sticker on the inside of the driver door for some extra stuff, such as the original paint code, which can tell you if it was ever repainted.

Not gonna happen. If you see any of my stuff and pay attention to it for any length of time you will note fairly quickly that I am of the mind that it is far better to teach someone who is hungry to fish than to share your lunch with them every day.

I would much rather poke and prod a bit to give folks a way to use their intelligence and develop critical thinking skills to solve problems on their own than just give them a single answer.

He learns nary a fucking thing beyond knowing that he has a 4.0 if you say, Yep, that's a 4.0. If you get him to understand that a 4.0 is also a 6 cylinder and there are several ways to determine that, then now he has something of value. He also may want to change his plugs one day, how will he ever know how many to buy if someone doesn't point out that he can see them? He just needs to know where to look. Knowing it is a 4.0 won't help him find them.

Well if it was repainted the same color it will probably look like this with the sticker barely hanging on like they peeled it off then tried to re-apply it. Anyone have a way to get this to stick again?

Sorry to hear about your problems. I felt the same way after getting mine home and starting to clean it up. I am pretty sure the seller pieced my jeep together from parts, because I am finding things from multiple years all over it and lots of things broken that he said were working perfectly.

For example the A/C blew cold as ice when I bought it, but after 2 weeks was dead. I was pretty annoyed and have attempted to fix it, but it still leaks slowly. Also, the valve valve cover gasket leaked like crazy, but was pretty clean on initial inspection. He had obviously cleaned it up before I looked at it . Unfortunately the list goes on. It is ultimately my fault because I did not inspect it close enough, but it was my 1st Jeep and I honestly just got excited and caught up in the purchase. He seemed like a nice guy too.......

On the bright side, these things are pretty simple to work on, and fit together like the automobile version of Legos, so having parts from multiple years is not a huge deal. This forum was a huge help and has really knowledgeable people who are willing to help, so take advantage of their knowledge for sure. Just get it to running/driving order and once you are a few months past the hurt from the lies you will love it and the little problems will not seem like such a big thing. Just take your time and fix them as you go.

No need to be embarrassed at all, trust me. We were all there once. Hell, when I was 16 and bought my first car, they told me it was a GTI 16V, but it was actually a GTI 8V that they had put badges on. I genuinely didn't know any better because I was 16 and just getting into cars.

Anyhow, as others have already stated, that is indeed a 4.0.

And again, don't be afraid to ask any question here, no matter how stupid it may seem. I built this forum so it wouldn't end up like so many of the others, where people jump down your throat as soon as you make your first post.

I painted a truck several years ago. I had problems getting all the tags to stick to the back on the door jambs as well. I used double sided sticky tape. Peel the sticker off, flatten it out. Clean the jamb with rubbing alcohol. Take a clean rag and wipe the film from the alcohol off. Apply the tape to the back of the tag. Peel the paper off the tape. Apply the tag back to the jamb. Presto, stuck tag. None of the tags peeled for the three years I owned the truck, after the paint job.

I never thought of that. I have a few peeling decals under the hood that I would like to keep.
