Hoist / Winch Questions

I am looking for a 110v winch/hoist, but trying to weigh my options for use.

First and foremost I want to use it to hoist up my TJ's top up to the 10' ceiling in my garage. I built a frame using Unistrut, now I just have to figure out a hoist setup and I like the idea of an electric winch for this. Obviously a 400-1000lb winch will do this job, BUT...…

Second, I have a 4 post lift and I keep thinking I should set something up so I can pull a car onto it if I ever fall into the situation I can't drive one on. My heaviest vehicle is a 6000lb GMC Yukon XL.

Lastly, if I went with an electric hoist/winch vs something like a hand winch, I could use it for various other things down the road. For instance, my garage actually has a 19' vault with a loft that is 10' off the floor (under this is where the top will be lifted to) and I could use it to lift heavy items up to the lift if needed or maybe even pull an engine if needed.

So my question is if I were to use it to pull a vehicle onto a lift, how strong of winch would I really need? Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm thinking it wouldn't need to be a full 6000lb winch to pull a car with rolling wheels that is on concrete, but it would have to get it up the ramps. I'm sure I could also employ the help of a few guys if this was ever needed to help push. Just curious what I should look at. I'm not wanting to buy some top of the line brand necessarily. My neighbor has used a Harbor Freight winch for years to hoist his deer, his truck bed, my V6 outboard powerhead assembly, etc and it's worked well. I'm thinking of something along that lines for now, unless someone convinces me to go a different brand/route.

Thanks!!

Use a hoist for lifting. I had a hoist in one of my garages to lift ATV’s so I could park one under another for space.

The hoist had a brake meant to hold the load. It was an 800 lb capacity one from harbor freight. 800 lbs was a two-part lift using a snatch block, 400 lbs single part.

This one

Sounds like I'd be better off buying two different units. One for hoisting and then buy an actual winch for the winching? I figured there were differences but didn't know what exactly.

I think you’d be happier with two anyway. If one is holding your hard top then you can’t use it for anything else.

I looked at H.F. and I guess it's not much more to buy both.

As for using one to hold the hard top and not being able to use it for anything else. When trying to decide how I wanted to build this, I came across this post on the jk site, where the guy made a 2x4 framed plywood shelf that is held up by chains that he lowers the top down onto once he lifts it up. This way any hoist isn't having to stay under load and he can use the shelf to store other items. I could then use the winch the rest of the year! I think it would be great to put the soft top doors/windows/etc up on during the days when they aren't wanted. He used a hand winch, I want electric I think. He built a wood shelf, I'm considering using aluminum or steal...maybe even Unistrut?

Here's the link to his build. Pretty cool shelf idea IMO.

That guy who posted that is a moron.

Kidding that’s @Chris the owner of this site.

My top has been held up for at least 3 years using a garage smart hard top system and it’s never been an issue. If I was using the harbor freight hoist I’d probably add some safety chains with straps under the hard top as added safety.

Not that I wouldn't necessarily trust it hanging, I just liked the idea of having a shelf there. Being is going 10' up, even with a shelf it'll be above my head so why not gain the storage!

Yeah, I saw it was him when i went to look for the link. Just didn't update my text.

Not 110V but I just bought the Mile Marker Rhino 1000 cordless winch to have as a utility winch/hoist old man junk moving aid.
The reason I went that route is it has 37' of synthetic cable vs Warn at 15, and it has a remote also. I'm a Warn fan, but the reality both of these are probably made in China anyway.
And they are running a sale over the 4th too, if it's something you are interested in.
I bought a winch rope extension and found a couple mini recovery rings and shackles to open up some other options for using it too.

I've only had mine for a week, so I can't really comment on it long term yet.
