I will be ordering front and rear gears for the TJ next week and was wanting to hear differing opinions on what gear ratio to go with. Current specs are 2003 4.0 Auto Dana 30 Front and 44 with LSD in the rear. It has a 3 inch lift on 33's and is dog slow. I have been looking at 4.88. However, before I bite the bullet and order them should I entertain 5.13? How will they effect highway driving. This thing loves to make me worry when I go to town right now since I have to go over a mountain pass. Luckily it only gets probably 40 miles a week put on it tooling around post.

Thanks Fouledplugs. I actually played with that the other day. However, I was looking for seat of the pants input. I can run and fully understand the numbers. But, I was looking for those who have experience with either ratio. Especially with the anemic shift points and gear ratios that this 42RE has.
If it has the 42 trans and the whopping 190 hp, (at the crank) go with the deeper gear set.

Would love to read some honest feedback on how it drives once you have the gears swapped. Check back in when it’s done. It helps folks who are on the fence about re-gearing in the future.
Good decision, don't let anyone at the shop doing the work talk you into anything else. If they try it's clear they don't understand the 42RLE transmission.

I'm on 33's with oem 4.10 gears.
I plan on swapping them to 5.38, just like jerry.
If they made 6 to 1 gears for my axles I would use those.
I hate good gas mileage, but love me some gosh darn torque!
