when I was removing my hardtop and removing the interior parts a few months ago for my Initial TJ cleanup, everything found its way back to its place except this one wire harness piece.
2002 TJ Sport with original HT.
the wire assembly is marked "87909-M 3371-43" and is about 15" long. it seems to be an extension for the wire harness from tub to the HT. I have it all plugged in and working without this piece.
this is one thing that I did not pay attention to when removing top.

everything works without it. is there a logical reason to keep and use this?
Thanks in advance.

That looks like an adaptor that is used when the hardtop and Jeep are different years (i.e. 97-02 vs. 03-06). I'm surprised it was part of the wiring if the two harnesses connect without it.

Is your hardtop original to your Jeep? Does the hardtop have vents on the rear corners?

Yes. 2002 with original vent hardtop.

Thanks… funny that I did not even notice it when I bought the jeep…
Thanks for confirming.

Your HT has a dome light above the rear glass, correct? Did it function properly with the extension installed? Does it function properly without it?

no rear light but the rear windshield wiper is working fine.

I believe this extension was for the dual top option. If you purchased this, the soft top was folded in a cover at the bottom of the back glass. This extension was needed to get around the bundle of soft top.

That makes sense. While my Jeep did not have the soft top and frame with it. It does have the tabs on the roll bar (b-pillar area).
I wish I had both tops.

All TJ's will have the mounting tabs whether it came with a soft top or not. Odds are if you have this extension it was a dual top optioned Jeep from the factory.
