Half Door Hinges

Hi all,

I finally found a pair of half doors. They were nice and flush on the Jeep they came off of. I have two issues I need help with though.

The passenger side was difficult to close but I was able to move the striker plate out a bit and now it latches fine. But, it looks like the top of the door sticks out a bit from the tub. If I push the strike plate back in a bit, sounds like the bottom of the door hits the tub. The door looks straight to me but not 100% sure.

For the driver side, it latches fine but the bottom hinge pin doesn't sit flush with the hinge on the tub. I read another post that said the Jeep was painted after assembly. I assume the hinge plate on the door has some wiggle room to be adjusted. Doing so, will show the unpainted outline where the hinge is moved. I don't know if that would be more unsightly or the gap in the hinge pin. I assume the harm of leaving it as is would be all the weight of the door will be resting on just the top hinge instead of both hinges.

Help would be appreciated.

If I was OCD about it I think I’d focus on getting the gap right at the front edge of the door by working with that lower hinge.

Then I’d adjust the latch on the rear.

Lastly, I’d consider how to paint/touch up the front hinge area.
 
When I installed mine, I loosened the screws on the door mounted side of the hinges enough so I could move the hinges easily. I also loosened the screws on the striker so I could move it with significant pressure. I then closed the door so it engaged the striker and moved the door until everything was in place. Since I barely loosened the striker, it would keep its position if I unlatched the door. Once I got everything lined up, I used various pieces from my trim removal kit (small plastic crow bars and such) to keep the door in place while I tightened the hinge screws. I then carefully opened the door so the striker would not move and tightened it. Everything lined up nicely.

I think, in some instances, it may be necessary to bend the cylinder to get the alignment perfect... probably have to use a long tight-fitting rod that is hard enough to not bend when you try to bend the cylinder.

I plan on going back and forth with my half and full doors, so I may have to find a happy medium for the striker that will work with both, but the hinges can be adjusted independently since they're part of the door.
 
I had my half doors adjusted at the hinges on the door side to fit my Jeep. I left my strikers as is because I switch the half doors out with my full doors but if you are planning on only running one set you can adjust both as indicated above. The adjustment at the hinge is enough to have them line up almost perfectly but those bolts can be difficult to loosen like everything else on the TJ.

To clarify,

The hinge that's not down all the way is on the driver side. That is a separate issue with the tweaked passenger door.

Regarding the passenger door that sticks out at the top but is flush at the bottom, is that something that tinkering with the hinges would fix?

Looks like lower front edge is too tight,raise the striker toLevel out that bottom hinge on the door side,then get a 2x4 on the bottom and push to top of the door till it looks right,and then (bobs your uncle)

The combination of hinge screws, striker, and - as a last resort - gently bending the hinge cylinders - should do it. For bending the hinges, you can try a long bar that fits in the cylinder and try to bend it. You can do the tub-mounted hinges in place with the doors off. For the doors you'll need to either remove the hinges or figure out how to brace the doors without damaging them, but the hinges may move before they bend. You can remove the hinges, carefully place them in a vice so they won't get scratched and try to bend them with something else that won't scratch them. Maybe tapping with a plastic dead blow hammer. Or you can just touch up the paint once you've tested the fit and know they're bent properly.

Again, I'd try the other things before I try bending the hinges.
