This has been discussed, but I would like more definitive conclusions. What is the best size, mount, and location?

Reading that it needs to be within reach, not in way of feet, not a potential projectile, 5lb ABC (or Elements50?), or possibly 2x2.5lb ABC (but they don’t expend at as high a rate as 5lb).

I’d like something that will fit next to the driver’s seat, but not sure there’s a 5lb that will fit there. Maybe behind the passenger seat in the footwell would be accessible, but not easily if it’s really secure. The Elements50 solution would be ideal if they are really good, but I don’t really know.

Several of us have done this:

Although there's about a 50/50 chance that it will come out when the driver's seat is folded forward.

I also put an extra one in the back with a Bartact holder:

I recall seeing a thread about this recently, and someone posted a video where different sizes and types were tested on a junk car engine bay. The Element was just pathetic. Little to no effectiveness and even less range. One of the guys recommended having a 5 lb dry chemical extinguisher at the very minimum if you want to accomplish anything meaningful.

Yeah, that clamp in front of the seat has always bothered me. Beside the seat would be great, but I’m not sure if a 5lb would fit. I also don’t want it to interfere with the tumble mechanism.

I have mine mounted on the trans tunnel on the driver side. It’s a smaller one so definitely not a 5lb but I try and keep a second one on the back of the roll bar just like zroba does with the bartact. I have a lock box under the driver seat where I store my handgun when I can’t take it in special building so I didn’t want to block that. I also don’t tumble the drive side seat, so that wasn’t a concern. I think some how mounting it it on the b piller just behind the driver seat would be where I would put a larger one.

I've got two 2 lbs normally mounted on the bar behind both the driver and passenger seat.

I'm struggling with where to mount them when I have the hard top on.

Having done a number of burned out vehicle recoveries you've got a very small window to get that fire under control before it spirals out of control.

Best thing is wheel with friends so if something happens you've all got a collection of devices.

Shovels and buckets can help too. Sometimes it's less about the fire and more about keeping it from spreading.

That and practice. I know tons of folks who have extinguishers and couldn't get them off their Jeep in five minutes yet alone 20 seconds.

I carry a 5lb Purple K mounted to the top of my Tuffy instatrunk:

And a 2.5lb ABC beside my drivers seat:

I chose the rear location for the 5lb extinguisher because mine would not fit between my drivers seat and the tub, and in front of the drivers seat seemed like it would interfere with my feet getting in and out of the Jeep. I drive with my seat all the way back, which would expose the extinguisher more than if the seat were further forward.

Since the Purple K chemical is BC, I also decided to carry a smaller ABC in case the need should arise to extinguish a small grass fire, which I've actually had to do before.

I agree with all you said Mac, but one thing to be aware of in the above statement is that you need to be aware of how various chemicals react to each other.

For example, I carry a 5lb Purple K extinguisher for flammable liquid (gas/oil) fires, but I would not use it if someone has already tried to fight such a fire with an ABC extinguisher. Purple-K should never be mixed with phosphate-based fire suppression agents (ABC dry chemical), as the resulting chemical reaction will destroy its efficiency.

All the more reason to do a fire drill with the group you're going out with!

Pinhole on the power steering pressure hose directed at the exhaust manifold. Let the engine get up to temp, and then turn the wheel to full lock. The rules state that nobody can move until they see the first sign of flames. We draw straws to see whose jeep we test on.

If you want to be game ready, you have to practice in realistic conditions.

I actually just ordered this off Amazon Vine, anxious see if it's any good.

That what I use in my Jeep minus the roll bar mount. I attached it to a piece of angle that is bolted between the seat rails. It is out of the way, the seat still operates normally and I can reach it.

This is a standard 8-pounder available at Wal-Mart. I went with the bungee bracket instead of the spring clip one for extra security in a collision.

It moves with the seat as it folds and tumbles.

Same bracket/extinguisher setup that I put in my F-150:

Instead of being bolted to a piece of aluminum bar stock, this one is fastened straight to the sheet aluminum body using rivet nuts, meaning the bracket can be removed in 30 seconds for very large cargo.

Neither bottle has ever shifted on me. For the TJ, I chose to put it on the passenger side, to mitigate the risk that if it comes loose, it could interfere with operating the pedals. (The F-150 one is on the passenger side due to the bed light switch being on the driver's side.)

I kept thinking of that, but with the hardtop on 7-8 months out of the year I think it would be too difficult to access. I'd have to jump out, tumble the seat forward, and reach in and behind the b-pillar to get it.

I think definitely a 2.5lb on the driver's side next to the door. Good stuff. Thanks.

This is more like it. I really like the bungee bracket and bungee's. I need to find these.

Nice setup. Definitely gives me some good direction. Now to do some searching and get set up. Thanks...

I've been thinking of mounting one on the spare tire carrier.

Well, you usually do have to get out of the Jeep if something is on fire, so maybe you could get there quick. Definitely easier than getting in the back of the TJ with a hardtop on. Granted, whenever I do hard wheelin' I normally have the hardtop off.

I have mine mounted behind the center console. I run with no backseat and wanted quick access to it, if ever needed. Drilled a couple of holes in the center console to securely mount it. It almost fits in the rear cup holder so keeps it stable at the bottom. Hasn’t moved an inch after beating up the Jeep on the trails.
