Fire Extinguisher Size, Mount, Location

I settled on this…
  1. Big enough to give me a chance to put out a fire before it gets out of hand
  2. It is more secure than the spring mount and won't become a missile
  3. Quick access and won't get buried under cargo
  4. I dont have the driver side flip and fold feature but the seat slides forward and back through its entire range.
The camera angle makes it look smaller than it is (insert penis joke here). It is a 4lb extinguisher. I usually have a 5lb but I bought the wrong one when the old one aged out.

Well...if you really want to be serious you need nitrogen? tanks, hoses, nozzles and a drag racing pull knob for fire.

I want datacenter level protection. It should automatically pop up a sealed tent and your ARB pump should run in reverse to pull all the air out in 30 seconds max. Plz submit designs kthxbi

I'd guess I'm a bit more sensitive to vehicle fires. We've seen several in JV. Weekly on the freeways when I was driving them daily. The ones in JV were recreational and race related. I've been around a few potential versions on trail runs. One in particular, actually two but the first one was due to a battery plus cable running along the top of the frame and the inner fender pinched it to the frame under articulation. The sparks were spectacular and thankfully the cable melted enough of the inner fender away before it ignited anything other than insulation. That one stands out because we asked where the fire extinguisher was and he replied that his dog ate it. The second was exactly the same but no dog and no extinguisher.

The worst one likely still shows evidence in the dirt. Family was headed out to the second lake bed. Got most of the way up the hill pulling a toy hauler full of toys. Something inside caught on fire. They had just enough time to unhook the tow rig and get away from it by the time they noticed it. Not sure any number of extinguishers would have put that one out.

I’m at the point of deciding it’s not worth it to have one at all. The unlikely odds of a fire starting in my vicinity. The unlikelihood of putting a fire out. The better likelihood of a ‘flying projectile.’ All point in the direction of a do nothing decision.

Accidents happen and - like the thread highlights, maybe the extinguisher would help or not, depending on the situation.

The real-world situation I read about from others was parking in tall dry grass that was ignited by the cats/mufflers heat. For me, I've been in groups were we pulled over into tall grass with total abandon of concern.

Sure - in that situation, you can move the Jeep, then try to jump to stomp or work on the fire... but a ground fire like that burns down CA every year. So we need to be prepared...

Somewhat joking there, but the reality is a brush fire gets away quick where you'd likely not have blankets/coats/etc ready to smother if it's summer. This is the situation I want to be ready for with an extinguisher. The bush fire that doesn't grow...

Great thread @JMT to keep this topic active.

I am still looking for my solution after pulling the 2x2.5lbs I had zip-ties to the rollcage with their existing (for a wall) mounts. Basically wedged between the rollcage & rear wheelwell.

Those bungee brackets look great.

I'm ambivalent on this topic now, but the impetus for this thread was my dad was pulling his RV in MA and a spring broke and rubbed on the tire starting a fire. That was about 4 days ago. My dad was able to put it out. He had bought a new extinguisher 2 months ago in preparation for this trip. They are still waiting on the adjuster to decide if it can be flat towed to the nearest RV repair facility. When I mentioned getting an extinguisher he said, "Do it now!" His fire was basically structural though.

Same - I've had my eye on the bungee brackets and they're on my potentials list.

I am eyeing the spot in front of the driver seat - if the fold/tilt capability isn't impacted. The brackets that have the 'pull here' plug seems to add too much length and could/would bind against the front of the seat when pulled.

I don't like the clamps as I don't trust them on a hard head-on and I don't need anyone in the driver seat having a projectile in the footwell.

Fire extinguishers were one the earlier adds to my Jeep when I bought it used, near stock. Still think it's a valuable tool to have on-hand.

With that said, I don't put extinguishers in my other daily drivers. So that that for what it's worth...

Glad you dad made it out safely as any towed platform fire can grow to the tow vehicle!

When pulled on mine, the pin does not come anywhere near binding against either my stock seats or my new PRPs. The seat slides front and back as well as it ever did with no interference. However, I don't have a tilt-forward folding seat.

It is bolted solidly in place. If I were to hit something hard enough to break the mount free, my ankles would be pretty far down on my worry list.

I finally got a 5 lb extinguisher mounted to my tire carrier, with a bracket I won in a raffle 15 years ago. About time i got that round tuit!

Instead of hose clamps I wired it on with a ClampTite, which is a pretty cool tool. It's more fiddly than a hose clamp but make a much cleaner bands, without sharp edges. I have a nice scare on my knuckle from a hose clamp. These are stronger, too.

Drilled for nutserts. Quick clamp provides good pressure and makes nice chips

I can release it without opening the carrier, if I have to.

I put a hook in the shed for when I don't want to leave it on the jeep, right below the one that stays there.

I don't know what I would use the ClampTite for, but I want one. That's a slick tool.
