Tesla faces a proposed class action claiming it speeds up odometers on its electric vehicles so they fall out of warranty faster, saving Elon Musk’s company from having to pay for repairs.

The plaintiff Nyree Hinton alleged that Tesla odometer readings reflect energy consumption, driver behavior and “predictive algorithms” rather than actual mileage driven.

He said the odometer on the 2020 Model Y he bought in December 2022 with 36,772 miles on the clock ran at least 15% fast, based on his other vehicles and driving history, and for a while said he drove 72 miles a day when at most he drove 20.

Hinton, a Los Angeles resident, said this caused his 50,000-mile basic warranty to expire well ahead of schedule, leaving him with a $10,000 suspension repair bill that he thought Tesla should cover.

“By tying warranty limits and lease mileage caps to inflated ‘odometer’ readings, Tesla increases repair revenue, reduces warranty obligations, and compels consumers to purchase extended warranties prematurely,” the complaint said.

Tesla and its lawyer did not immediately respond on Thursday to requests for comment, but have denied all material allegations in the lawsuit. The Austin, Texas-based company does not have a media relations office.

Hinton is seeking compensatory and punitive damages for Tesla drivers in California, potentially encompassing more than 1 million vehicles, court papers show.

Tesla moved his lawsuit this month to Los Angeles federal court from a state court in that city.

So how many other Tesla drivers noticed a discrepancy in odometer miles vs. actual miles? Seems with all the concern about “range anxiety” many drivers would have easily noticed this.

It’s easy enough to check it so I’d be surprised if it’s a real issue.

Yet another double cab, over thought, over technologied, and over priced disaster.

You forgot screeeeeeeeeeens.

I actually like the double cab. Often I am traveling with both my boys when doing chores or taking stuff up to camp to work on. Kind of need it. Especially since they aren't making benchseat single cabs anymore

Screeeeeeeeeeens come under "over technologied". I have no problem with double cabs for those who need them, not having the option and being stuck with a vestigial bed is annoying.

No infotainment and manual windows. Here you go, @Zorba!

My kinda vehicle, but I suspect most folks today would not be able to comprehend a vehicle that is simply a vehicle.

I mean, what are the drivers supposed to do - pay attention the road?
And what are the kids supposed to do? Look out the window and see the world around them?

I made myself remember a co-worker talking about teaching his kids to drive. He was trying to get them to be aware of their surroundings, and they didn't know the way from the house to the places they had been on a regular basis for years as passengers while the parents drove.

Its a huge step in the right direction, although this video was yakking about PHOOOOOONNE, PHOOOOOONNE, PHOOOOOONNE, and PHOOOOOONNE!!! Hopefully, a digital display will show range and the damn PHOOOOOONNE won't be required. There shouldn't even be enough computational power onboard to even interface with one, much less require one.

I thought it was interesting that it isn't directly connected at all. It can do remote software updates through your PHOOOOOOOONNNNNE, so it has that capability, but works without it too. Seems like a good compromise for people worried about their car being shut down remotely while still allowing convenient fixes.

Shouldn't even need software updates/fixes as far as I'm concerned. Still, its a step in the right direction that is LONG over due. We'll see how it progresses.
