Engine ID / number (2006 2.4)

OK, so I'm officially F*cked. I just came off the phone with Jeep germany, they could get in to the system with the VIN and the Car ID paper i found in the car.
He could also see that in 2008 the car got a new engine. the old engine number was deleted, but the new engine number wasn't put in the system..
so in the end i have nothing. thats probably why I coulndt find anything. it wasnt there..

It doesn’t make sense to me there’s no way forward. Stamp it or something. It’s a freaking 2.4L. Another case of stupid bureaucracy. Where is common sense?

I Know, its so stupid! Especially at it is so freaking unimportant..

The only thing I can do is to stamp it indeed. The only problem is. I have no idea of the build-up of the number. Letters? Numbers? How many?

I’m allready on this for days. It’s so freaking annoying..

anyway, the inspection center says it needs to be on the block, the jeep dealer also.

Then I’d go with the last 8 digits of the VIN. It seems unsuspecting.

Can you get a blown up motor or just a block with a readable number and slap it in for the idiots to have something to write down? Then put yours back in?

I was allready on that.. found something in spain that looks like a really nice block. same casting number, the seller is hopefully coming back to me tommorow. I just need the build-up of number, I will change some digits and i'm good.
I allready found someone who can put the number in the engine..

but I doubt it has a good readable number as I have 2 friends with the same engine and they also cant see any number on their engines..
I was talking to the jeep importer in germany this afternoon, checked 3 VIN numbers (mine and of my two friends) and all three didnt showed a engine number..
At my data it says the engine is changed, theirs it just say nothing.

This guy in germany also told me to put something on, as he also thought it was stupid bureaucracy. He told me the new 2024 wranglers are like "W212134" and he told me to make something with M,N or P as that should be around 2006/2007 with 6 random numbers behind it.

But I see so many different examples online. litteraly checked all the youtube movies of engine numbers, I know almost everything about this freaking numbers now.

Correct me if I'm wrong!

1996-2002
For the 2.5 and 4.0 engines it worked like this:
1. 1st digit – the year (for example 4 = 1994)
2. 2nd and 3rd digit – the month (01-12)
3. 4th and 5th letter – the engine type (MX = 4.0L) (HX = 2.5L)
4. 6th and 7th digit – the day of the engine month (01-31).
For example 601HX23 = January 23, 1996, 4 cylinder

1996-1999.jpeg

and the last 8 digits of the VIN were used.

2003-2006. cant find anything. only thing I found was a tag of a 2005 rubicon 4.0L 6 cylinder:
It looks like the 8 last digits of the VIN are on there..

2005 rubicon.png

This is the only thing I found on these 2.4L Chrysler engines.
It looks like it says "55" but that metal plate is in the way..
Anyway that doesnt match with the VIN. The 5 does as it was a 2005 but after that it should be a "L,P or W" (plant location according to this website)

The 2.4 Cherokee engines have the last 8 Digits of the VIN number:

Chrysler PT cruiser 2007 2.4 engine has also last 8 digits of the VIN:

ptc 2007.png

Wrangler JK 2007-2018,
is completly random...

Wrangler 2010:

Wrangler 2015: (looks like my 3 years old engraved that)
wrangler 2015.png

Wrangler 2017: (same as last digits of VIN)

other Jeeps:

Compass: (same as last digits of VIN)

Patriot: completly random.

so lets say i did my homework but it makes NO sense. If only I have a "build up" of the number of that freaking 2.4L engine.
I knew I should've bought that 6 cilinder. :ROFLMAO:

Off course i can make something up, but what if this guy is like "yeah, thats not the correct number" I only got one shot.

or maybe I just think to much, If nobody knows, so how should they know..

Lets hope this spanish guy comes back with good news tommorow.

(btw. all these images I found on the internet. So I dont want to bring anyones data out in the open, it was allready there.)

As I stated in post #12 this is just a build date code. Not an engine number. There could be hundreds of engines with the same build date code on.

The VIN is marked on the early TJs too.

AH! I completly missed that, just looked at the picture....
(I edited it)

but then it makes much more sence to put the last digits of the VIN in!

It definitely looks like the last 8 digits of the VIN.
So I will just ask my guy to engrave my last 8 digits in the engine.

Thanks a lot for all the help and listening to my complaints.

I hope your morning is going to be as good as mine!

Cheers!

That looks like a part number lots of Jeep parts numbers begin 5301. I can't find it in an online search but it might be in the parts lists I have on my laptop at home.

Ignore that, the last pic has just loaded on my phone. That does indeed look like the last 8 of a VIN.

I know, It is the same part number as my engine. So it has to be the same.

It kind of make sense if they engraved the VIN number in before they installed the engine.

Mine got a new engine in 2008 according to the jeep records. So they probably didn’t engraved the VIN number in. Just put the new engine.

Or that’s what I think.

Anyway, this weekend I’m going to slap that number on it. And Monday inspection.. Jezus..

So engine number is in again.

When I was taking everything apart I found out that my manifold was cracked so changed that also. When I was sending the old “numbers” out they were getting a bit more visible.. it definitely showed the last 8 digits of my VIN, today we put it back.

Little bit lower that original, but I’m alright with it.

Anyway, if anyone is looking for it.
2.4L 2003-2006 engine numbers are the last 8 digits of the VIN number. Case solved.
Tomorrow inspection!

Now I can finally remove that hideous bullbar 😂

Now pay the import tax of 4900,- euros and hopefully soon my Portugese plates.

Looks good. Good look with the inspection. If it passes I think I'd probably apply some clearcoat over the number to help preserve it.
Good idea! Will do that!
