Clutch master cylinder / slave or throwout bearing (here we go again)

Well.. I am scratching my head... Got the Jeep back from the shop the new Mopar TOB & MC/Slave installed and my wallet quite a bit lighter the clicking sound when pressing and releasing the clutch returned after about five minutes of driving. Jeep is going back to the shop tomorrow. Good think I didn't return the rental today.

I'm really so done with the Jeeps...

Does it make the sound while the Jeep is not running also? Mine was fine after all new parts during ax-15 swap in. Then after about 1500 miles I've got the clickies, when is running and not.

Did you ever check the pedal arm pivot points?

100% certainty it is NOT the pedal pivot points.

First because I have been under there servicing the pedal assembly, replaced the brake light switch and lubed every pivot point you can get to. And second because if you put your hand on the slave and operate the clutch you feel it click.

Might have made progress today but I am going to wait until I have a chance to drive it.

Transmission came out again and this time the pressure plate and clutch came out too and they found one of the dampening springs in the clutch plate loose.
I can’t get my head around this little spring, buried behind the pressure plate deep in the bell housing, could be responsible for the clicking sound linked to above.

Wow

Both the shop and I are out of ideas. Just finished installing a new clutch kit. The MC/Slave and TOB are brand new..

The shop put about 20 miles on it (ample time for it to warm up) and put another 30 miles on it and it felt great, until it didn’t.. started making the same exact clicking sound, albeit not quite as loud, yet.

This thing has cost me nearly $10k since the NV3550 went back in November. It’s left me stranded four times. I have zero confidence in going farther than the milk barn on the corner. I am too far deep into at this point to sell it, and I have too much of a conscience to not fully disclose what’s going on. But the enjoyment is completely gone.

Did anyone check for crankshaft axial end play? Another extremely remote possibility that I once experienced in an old F250 diesel was firewall flex. Ford actually provided a reinforcement kit to fix that, but that clutch was a monster compared to a TJ.

So.. at this point the only thing we haven't changed is the pressure plate.

The clicking can't be identified.

Mentioned the crank play to the shop. They are baffled as to what the clicking sound is. I having been stranded more than once I have no interest in driving the Jeep. Rentals are really expensive in the NE...

So Monday the Jeep goes off to a transmission shop. No idea what this is going to cost me.

Started a new "Name that sound..." thread.

Hope you get it all figured out. My only experience with a click like that on my Jeep was on the master/slave and clutch that came with it, all aftermarket. It did go away with a different slave/master but shortly after I pulled everything and renewed with a LUK clutch and everything associated like you already did, along with a new Mopar master and slave. That was 2 years ago and all is still good although it's probably only been around 6,000 miles.

Do you recall what master/slave you used?

I have been through three before this one. One DuraLast from Autozone/Advanced Auto, one the shop did and I don't the brand and one LUK. I had hopes the Mopar one would be the answer, but this click keeps coming back.

It's my DD and it has stranded me a few times.. I can't, with clear conscience, just ignore it.

I used a Mopar from Mopar Parts Giant. I believe my 2000 uses a different one than your newer Jeep, the one from Mopar Parts Giant appeared to be the last one in the country. It blew apart on me at first because my throw out fork fell down when I went to install it which is why I replaced everything, then I put the Mopar back together and bled the air out and re-installed it.

To be clear I never got a clicking sound from the Mopar unit, I never even got a chance to use it before replacing everything else. I got the clicking from whatever was on there before which a previous owner had installed. I always thought the clicking was somewhere under the dash like the push rod or the pivot, but I could be wrong. For all I know maybe it was in the bell housing, like the pivot or something. All I know is everything is good now with it all being new.

Ah I thought yours was newer. Where did you find a Mopar master and slave?

The local Jeep dealerships parts department.

Both the master/slave and TOB were a fortune compared to aftermarket, but I figured best to try to eliminate some variables.

Does anyone know if PN: 52107652AC will work for me? I have a 2005 LJ that I recently installed the Novac AX 15 conversion. This morning I was taking my grandson for a ride and the it seemed as though the clutch was not releasing with my foot off of the pedal. Makes me suspicious of the hydraulics. I replaced clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing, and arm when I did the swap.

Sounds like you need a different shop. Could be nothing more than a lack of grease during assembly. The pivot, slave rod end, transmission snout, and where the TOB and its spring ride on the fork all require lube during assembly. If assembled dry, it could cause the clicking.

It seems like junk aftermarket parts are what left you stranded. Now you just gave an annoying click.

The whole mechanism is pretty simple. If your shop can't figure it out, you need a different shop
