Catastrophic Loss Of Engine Oil

About 1000 miles on this oil filter, a Fram PH16. I started hearing a strange rattle on cold starts, but this morning it had an audible shift in the sound, and I shut the engine off and found the puddle of oil and engine all oil all over the compartment. upon inspection, I could see that part of the oil filter gasket had pooch out to the side and seem to be the source of the catastrophic leak. When I took the oil filter off, it was noticeably balloon out of the bottom. Could this just be a catastrophic failure of this filter or could there possibly be a larger cause?

Found it!

Im not sure what caused it but that was alot of pressure to expand that filter and maybe enough to push the gasket out also.

Hey Mac, how would the gases do something like this? Just trying to see the picture better.

Overpressurizes the oil. Could also be a failure in the oil pump relief valve.

Typically only seen on engines with boost from turbos and superchargers.

Might want to check your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

But like most folks have said...and Occam's Razor - most likely it's just a crappy oil filter.

That and if you've gone 500 miles with no additional symptoms...like say a massive loss of coolant or chunking a rod out the block then you're most likely good to go.

Awesome, thanks for the replies you guys. I’m finishing up doing a field cleaning (I happened to have a spare filter with me… another Fram). But I’ll be giving it a fire here soon.

Not getting 45 mpg any more... =)

I should have bookmarked that post. I'll see if I can find it and edit this.

You didn't even ask what his tire circumference is, am I right lol! What about the pitch of the road?!?!?!?!

There are days I miss him, and most I don't.

Probably combustion gasses. My guess is you blew a head gasket. At least your radiator didn't explode.

There aren't any oil ports in the head gasket to receive cylinder pressure. The top end is oiled through the pushrods.

Speaking of the top end,O.P. is there oil coming out of your pushrods? What is your oil pressure?
If it isn't the filter itself i would think a blockage in an oiling passage or stuck bypass in the pump. Swap the filter and check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge like this one.
