California specific engine swap vs stroker

I've traded a couple of emails with Russ and he understands what I'm looking for as far as what I would like to see for my TJ. Looks like he does fantastic work and builds these things all of the time. I still have more questions for him and should have answers back soon. His initial build cost is up there but I don't know how to compare it to a swap. Anyone have an idea of what the cost of swapping in a hemi or LS as well as any CARB inspection?

Also, if anyone has a clue as to whether the entire vehicle would need to be inspected for CARB vs just motor and emissions that would be helpful as well. I've cut my frame and tub to do a 15" extension and added 1 tons and hydro-assist. Beadlocks alone could raise eyebrows. Not sure if these would be issues or not.

I know I'm asking a lot of questions but if I mess with the powerplant and I can't pass CARB, let alone smog, then this is a non-starter for me.

What did he say about reliability?

He didn't state anything regarding mileage or along those lines. He's recommended putting together a particular kit based on my requirements and added this statement:

"To address your concern of longevity.
Every component were using in the engine build kit is an upgraded over stock OEM. From forged pistons, Chrome Molly rings, steel connecting rods, nitrided camshaft, ... and so on. "

Seems he's living with the issues I do as well. Here's another comment:

"I have three jeeps on 37‘s and a cabin in Big Bear so I fully understand your predicament of wanting to have drivability going uphill on a fully loaded Jeep, .... and not sweat the smog ck every two years. "

YES! This is all i want also. I don't need more wheeling power or vroom vroom sounds or a whatever i just want to not HATE HILLS on 37's! Sounds like a stroker, a rubicrawler and 5.38 might do the trick.

I just had a 4.6 Golen installed in a TJ running stock intake & outtake, 33x10x15 4.56.

Running smallish 33's it now performs more like a stock TJ with respect to power and toque.
My ratios are at 1 to 1 in 4th gear (same as stock) and in a drag race with a stock TJ - if I had to guess - I would say it's going to be a close finish. My 4.6 is tame but it wouldent be happy running 35's let alone 40's.

So would it "give you the horsepower you need"? I'd say no!

Google up jeep strokers forum to get their side of the equation. I just did an Silverado 1500 swap. There is no way a stroker will EVER come close to justifying the effort of an engine removal. Do it right the first time.
The referees are saying now has to be engine from light truck to light truck. This is a bummer bc now I can’t do the tdi swap that I’ve been wanting to do. Won’t allow car Engine into Light truck anymore. Not sure what other light truck engine would be more reliable than a 4.0. I would like more power though

You could source a CRD from a Grand Cherokee or a Liberty if you are set on diesel. It has been done before but I am not sure where any write-ups are.

I'm going to start the stroker build once I sell my motorcycle. I have a donor engine but I don't have the room to tear it down until the motorcycle is gone. Hopefully that will be soon.

I sold the motorcycle and now have room for this project. I tore down the donor engine and will be dropping off the head and the block tomorrow. Assuming all goes well when Russ checks for cracks in the head, he'll start working on them after he completes other projects currently under way. The head will get a lot of work done to it and the chambers will look quite a bit different. I'm looking forward to how this is going to end up.

It will be interesting to see how you like it. Will it still be able to pass a smog check?

That was the stipulation I had with this build. Russ says it will and he personally owns 3 of them showing that they do. I'm not looking for a wild stroker build but one that'll give me enough torque to climb the local mountains easier.

How did this project turn out?

He's had supply issues like a lot of others have had. I had a flood in my house that displaced me for a few months so the timeline/delay didn't affect me too much.
