Basket's Build

Hopefully used trailer prices come back down. If not, go out of state and buy something new. That’s what I ended up doing and I spent the same $ as I would have for used here.

Good to know. . next years problem lol. How much was a new trailer?

When you measure your mattress just know that many times a RV mattress is a different size than what you'd have in your home.

Mattress sizeDimensions (Length x Width)
RV Short Queen75” x 60”
RV Queen80” x 60”
RV Short King75” x 72”
RV King80” x 72”

I have RV Queen in my motorhome. Amazon sells RV size sheets too.

Good info, I had no idea

Ive been following the trailer prices for a bit. They're coming down, but still pretty expensive. A 16-18' steel trailer with a wood deck is $5.5-6.1k. Used isn't much cheaper.

It only matters if you want fitted sheets but it's still nice to know.

I guess I should be glad I bought my trailer YEARS ago.... I do know trailer prices have been crazy here in the PNW too. But it seems prices for most things related to motorized sports here are inflated.

What's crazy about the high prices on shorter "car hauler" trailers, is I've seen some sweet deals in the Crawler Hauler group on FB on 30'+ long goose neck trailers, and unless you're looking to mount the camper on the front of the trailer, it's a LOT more room than what is needed. Or I suppose you could haul the Jeep and the MR2 at the same time.

I bought my 18’ aluminum with wood deck for $4500 new in 2020. Sold it for $4500 in 2022 after I put about 10k miles on it. Stored inside too. Flat towing until I get a gooseneck.

If I can find one that I can afford I'd like my next trailer to be aluminum. But prices are crazy anymore.

I got mine 2 years ago, paid $2700 for a wood deck 16’. I had to add the second axle brakes myself. The prices were going up daily so if I waited for one to come in it was going to be more.
It was worth the drive to Hays KS. Had I known better, I would have bought 2 and turned a nice profit selling one.
Looks like the same one is $3700 now. Still not a bad deal.

I've been following the 5k axle sales. $3.7k isn't too bad for 3.5k

I think I'm gonna try taking the camper for a shakedown run this weekend. I want to go to the Taos area since it will be warmer, I've never been there, and it isn't too far. Thinking this camping spot so far:

Anyone know any good spots in NE-ish NM?

Enjoy the trip & post up some camping pictures. Always fun to try out your new to you stuff.

This was my first camping trip with my new to me camper back in 2006 over Labor Day weekend.

Okay I took the camper out this weekend. I went close to Taos NM.

I probably shouldn't have gone so far away for a "shakedown run". The battery died at about 2am and somehow the outlet in the truck bed failed while I was asleep, so the heat stopped working and I couldn't recharge the battery. Did I mention I forgot a sleeping bag and blanket like an idiot? So I slept in the truck with the heat on the first night!

I drove into town and managed to get a 7blade extension cord at Ace in Taos, so I was able to plug the camper in to the outlet on the rear bumper and keep from driving home that day. I hungout in Taos the rest of the day. Cute town, looks like a child designed all the buildings with play-dough.

I drove partially home since I had to leave my spot near Taos, it was down a pretty rough road so I wasn't gonna bother going back. I ended up staying near Monte Vista, I wanted to try to get a good view of the dunes and sangre de cristos in the first pic. Great thing about the camper, the spot I picked would've been shitty in a tent but is just fine for it. It was pretty close off 285, I didn't want to go any further east than I already was.

(yeah I know he's smelling a pile of shit)

All in all it was a great time. Having a camper is fun, although there is a LOT of stuff it needs done. But already gotta have something to do

And now for the fun part. The camper fell off the wood it was stacked on in my backyard when I was trying to put it on the truck on Thursday. So stupid. The spot we picked wasn't very flat... and the jacks don't reach near the ground when camper is on truck... so it was sat on top of piles of wood. Precariously. So obviously, it fell.

You can see only 1 jack in the above photos. One corner had it ripped off, and another 2 jacks are bent and unusable. So it's stuck on the truck til I get it fixed.

Whoops!

I started pulling it away today to check out the damage...

Whatever wood is in the corner of the camper is rotted to all hell, I can jam my finger through it. So I need to rebuild the corner so it's strong enough to hold the jack again.

Then to fix the rest of it. I'll probably go with a combo of OSB + spray foam, and a fibreglass exterior. Not 100% how to attach the new corner piece, looks like there is a metal frame underneath. This will be fun! If anyone has any tips or advice lmk. Otherwise it'll sure be an expirement.

Hate to say it but you might be better off parting out the camper and just buying another used unit. You can sell all your appliances and such to make some money back.

I'd join some camper forums and start asking if possible how to fix it.

The wood is so rotted it was only a matter of time. I just sped it up

The way those corners are sealed is a joke at best, even on new models they don't use enough sealant on the corners and the corner covers don't stay sealed very long. Fast forward a few years and water intrusion starts, little by little the gaps get bigger and more water gets inbetween the fiberglass and the wood.
