First post on here. I have a 1998 TJ, 2.5L ax5. I completely blew my 231J tcase last week. I replaced it was a 231J from a 98 cherokee and after reinstalling everything and filling up the trans (redline MT90, 3.5 quarts) and tcase(atf+4, 2 quarts), my transmission won't engage in gear at all. I can slide my shifter in any gear with clutch depressed or pressed with no resistance but it remains in neutral. When in reverse there's a faint grinding noise. Any advise would be great. This happens with engine on and off. When driveshafts weren't installed everything seemed to operate correctly, output shaft would rotate when spinning front shaft pinion by hand, wouldn't spin when in neutral, etc. Thanks

Also, when my tcase blew, I was able to pop it in 4wd (rear diveshaft flew off) and was able to move off the highway onto shoulder before shutting it down.

Different t-cases - all 231Js have different snouts, spline counts, shaft lengths.

My guess is the shaft of the AX-5 is being pushed forward and is binding when the t case is bolted down.

Have the original 231J?

Yep, i have the original 231. The tcase is got was from the ax5 of a cherokee, same year as my TJ

Cherokee T cases are clocked differently than TJ (ask how I know)
If you bolt it up, it's "turned" and hangs way down.
Probably not the cause of your problem, but something to be aware of
