So I blew my differential I know that for sure the oils burnt to shit and without even opening the cover I can see carrier is covered in shavings, the pinion moves in and out when you spin the axle shafts. So I’m wondering do I even bother trying to regear or do I buy the pick and pull Dana 44? The pick and pull one is 800$, but I keep hearing it’s easy to rebuild a diff Im just weary of that because I really don’t wanna spend a bunch of money on gears just to grind them up again cause I’m too dumb to do it right.

$800 is a decent price around here. I just sold one with disc brakes for $1200. I sell the Dana 44's with drums for $1000.

As far as doing gears yourself, I have a bunch of videos on my youtube channel The BFH Garage that can certainly help. The other people on here help out a bunch as well.

That's about what I see Dana 44's going for around here 90% of the time. I'm talking TJ specific Dana 44's. If you can find them for less than $800 IMO you're finding a deal most times. Every now & then I'll hear of one selling for like $400 but I never found these deals. It's why with my daughters old TJ & it having a Dana 35 I was going to do a 8.8 swap on it. It was cheaper in the long run.

Open the cover - Might not be able to rebuild that would make an easy decision. I would rebuild it if I could. Better to have all new bearings and seals than an old abused junkyard axle with problems waiting down the road.

Definitely agree with the idea to pull the cover. It takes 5 minutes to do so and you have no idea what's going on until you do. No reason to make plans without at least inspecting what's going on in your current axle. If the ring and pinion gear teeth are fine, I'd 100% re-bearing the diff with new Timkens unless you were planning to regear.

If you're regearing no matter what, then that's even more reason to inspect your housing for whether or not it's usable, because anything that would have been damaged should be replaced during the gear swap anyways.

The OP needs to clarify what axle he currently has & what gears he currently has. And then fill us in on tire choices and future plans for his Jeep plus planned usage.

Other than a 1998 Tj and 5 speed we have no ideas.

I'll agree with pulling the cover to see what's damaged and if your current housing is usable.
