Are TJs safe?

Hello ! , The dummy's put their seat belts on ! Duh.... :p

I wear my seatbelt always. I also wear a brain bucket when necessary (sure would be dumb to pay student loans after smacking my brain on something). But it's more about having the freedom of choice to do what I feel is necessary to be safe, not wanting to be unsafe.

Of course , I totally agree these are freedom of choice issues ! You should have options not granted or taken away by government bureaucrats .

Yep. Attacking people's freedoms by saying they're idiots that want to kill themselves is a strawmans argument.

Just because I think it's appropriate to wear hard toed boots chainsawing doesn't mean I want the government legally enforcing that. We all should be able to make choices like that for ourselves.

Gotta take these with a grain of salt because standards have changed... My MR2 has a 5 star crash rating from 1987 and no airbags 🤣

Even the new wrangler with more airbags, crumple zones, technology and overall much larger scored "Marginal". We know that "built like a tank" does not equal safe, especially when the front tires end up where your feet were, in an accident.

Doesn't mean you will die if you drive one, just means there are safer choices in cars for a teenager, or anyone. You can accept that, and also drive it. You can ride a motorcycle, you can drive a 1990 miata. Doing so won't kill you, but your chances of being killed in an accident are higher than a more modern/safe vehicle, and that's simply a fact.

Yep agree. That's why I drive my shitty 90s cars, and I was going to put my fiance in my brand new VW if that whole thing didn't burn up.

Certified 100% teenager safe !!!!

Ok I'm going to throw thus out there and have been reluctant to before now.

My oldest son died in a single car accident back in 2001.

1989 Toyota 4x4 going about 45mph buckled in and everything.

I lived through a crash in a 1984 Scrambler where the passenger and myself were both ejected from the Scrambler because we weren't buckled up.

Looking at the vehicles I should have died and my son should have lived.

Find a different pulpit to preach on.

Accidents happen and people die. It's a fact of life.

There are only 2 dates on a headstone, it's what you do in between them that matters.

Hey John , Thanks for sharing a painful fact from your life , Sorry for your loss brother.

I just get tired of folks carrying on about safety when accidents are going to happen!!!

And that is why they are called “accidents.” Exactly as you observed. Blessings to you brother.

OP, what you are driving is only one factor among many in my humble opinion. I think that is the takeaway.

Driving is a skill that is learned by experience. The more situations you encounter while driving the better you get at navigating the choices. There is a reason there are driving schools.

If your parents don’t want you driving a Jeep TJ, they are the authority figures in your life. They know you better than anyone here and they have a degree of responsibility resting on their shoulders. You should have the discussion with them and respect their decision.

Long story short - my first car love at 15 was a Triumph Spitfire. Worked and saved to buy one, and found one to buy. My parents told me no, as they thought that vehicle too small and unsafe.

During that "no" conversation, my mom said, "Have you thought about a Jeep?"

Changed my life.

OP - tell 'em you want a Triumph Spitfire.

Ah yes, Lucas electronics.

Joseph Lucas, The Prince Of Darkness 😁

At one point I really wanted a Triumph TR8.

I mentioned it to my dad and he said, "I didn't raise you that stupid, did I?. You get that from your mom?"
