Another TJ on 37s thread

17' Big brake kit question on Dana 30. The brake dust shield, trim and use as a shim? Doesnt really fit.
It does fit very well if you just take the upper section that is being pushed outward and distorted and gently massage it back into place with a dead blow. Or, you can bolt the rotor on and reach in with a flat blat screwdriver or prybar and push on the bits that will bring the outer flange into parallel with the rotor face.

I'd give @mrblaine a call tomorrow or wait for him to chime in but....

From the photo on his site though it looks like the dust cover was removed.

Thanks for the response. I`m out of time with a hurricane heading here to New Orleans. 3 bay doors still on back order from the last one. And one of them that is in front of the Jeep wont make it through another. Going "full rope" by close of business today. This thing has to be on all fours by Sunday morning. Ill try one more time but I think its time for a "three bolt" shim lol

It is a piece of .035 thick sheet metal. Don't let it kick your ass. Bolt the rotor on, reach in with a prybar and tweak it away from the rotor. Literally takes about 30-45 seconds per side. You can pry against the rotor, I promise it won't hurt it.

Not on brake kits since the saddle for the caliper is centered on the rotor by the use of the dust shield. It isn't my place to have you toss them so the spacing is built around using them.
What happens when you don't install the dust shield or an equivalent shim with your BBk? My 16"BBK hasn't had either for 2 years now. The dust shields apparently were tossed by 4WP when they originally installed my BBK 2 years ago and fucked up other shit like my Rubi lockers.

Apparently nothing if you've had them for 2 years. You let 4WP work on your Jeep? Chris might ban you for that huge mistake. ;)

Nothing, something, depends on tolerance stacking and how that plays out. We work to perfectly center the saddle on the rotor. That way when my machinist misses by a couple thou, the caliper saddle is a couple thou off, and someone tosses the dust shield, the rotor still doesn't drag on the saddle or abutment clips.

Same is true for edge of the brake pad lining up with the rotor. I use a set of OEM pads to figure out where the saddle has to be from centerline to just set the edge of the pad even with the edge of the rotor. I do installs all the time and that alignment varies about 1/8". Some are even, some are slightly inboard, some are outboard. Doesn't hurt anything for any of those but I wish they would all hold tighter tolerances.

See why men need to read directions! Right there on page 2 STEP 6 it tells my dumbass the info about the dust shields. lol

You are forgiven, you are a shop, shops never read the directions because they think they know what they are doing. Rig owners always read the directions so they don't have hardly any issues with the installs.

I'll leave as is then. Brakes work like a champ on and off road.

Good information to know. I have them on mine, but I’ve seen a lot of people toss them over the years. Ignorance is bliss I suppose…
