A pillar mount corrosion

My a pillar light mounts have some weird corrosion happening. It isn't normal rust... but, I am also not sure what type of metal it is made of - I think it is some sort of alloy. Anyway, the finish pulls off in large flakes and reveals what you see in the image below.

I was going to use some Rust Reformer Spray Paint, but I am wondering how well that will work on these as the original paint didn't seem to adhere to it well. If I had a sandblaster, I'd try to get them cleaned down to bare metal, but I don't have one.

That's how powder coated steel rusts. You can't just paint over powder coating, you have to strip it down to bare metal. It might be less expensive to just trash them and buy new ones.

Yes, I was just looking on the XT site and saw that they have some on sale. I might just go that way.
