I have an 06 TJ and noticed that RPM went up to 4000 before shifting. Later that day while I was on the highway I was doing about 50 and speed up to about 65 and had redlined. Soon after the jeep bogged up and dropped RPM, was able to make it home but was not driving over 10mph. I changed the transmission filter, oil, but didn’t notice any shards of metal or debris. Cranked it back up and drove it down the street with not problems until I hit 20 MPH. Bogged up and didn’t accelerate over 10mph at full throttle. My question to you guys is would it be a turbine replacement or complete transmission replacement that would be needed. It’s an Automatic transmission 6 cylinder.

@Wranglerfix does this sound like PCM related stuff?

I don't have a later year TJ so I don't have a firm handle on the classic dying computer stuff, but it definitely manifests itself in transmission behavior.

It seems to make sense I’ve been getting that pesky P1136 code if im not mistaken. Which was the bank 2 sensor 2 O2 sensor. Upon reading other threads best recommendation was to replace PCM after swapping out o2 sensor twice. That was about 10 months ago and jeeps out of commission for 3 months still starts easily.

Are you sure about the code? I do not see anything in Alldata.

P0161 my apologies but like said before i went to “just jeeps” in Austin Tx and the gentleman told me PCM should be replaced to get rid of that code.

Hmm so the PCM would give transmission issues? I’ve never really gone off roading where large amounts of strain have been given to the transmission. So I Thought it was odd that it died as I was running it.

The 42RLE is computer controlled, and in the later years (05 & 06 specifically, maybe 04?), the transmission control is within the PCM.

The p0161 comes back to a possible pcm issue. I can test it for you if you would like to send it in to confirm 100%.

Thanks for the info, I’ll look into replacing the PCM soon. I was trying to get the emissions test passed but was turned down due to the code. (06 wrangler and 42RLE)

The codes are what Wranglerfix needs. He's the only Jeep computer supplier you need to be aware of, and he's here asking about your symptoms to understand if this is the typcial computer failure we see on the 05/06 models. Don't spend any more money without talking to him.

I’d like to send it out but am almost sure I need it replaced been about a year with that code. I do appreciate the offer.
