4.8 Swap LJ

Wife wanted to go to dinner, I wanted to work on the Jeep, so we compromised and went to dinner.

All is not lost in the evening though.

I believe everything is now cut. Interestingly I have two wires I could not find in the manual (and have not yet followed where they go)

C3 at PCM, pin 32 is just marked * in the manual. This wire goes to the PDC.

Connector C102, wire pin 12 I could only find on C102, it doesn’t show up anywhere else when I search. This wire goes to the PDC.

I plan to get these in a spreadsheet with what I am pulling to integrate into my LS harness and what I am stealing for gauges.

Hoping this may help someone out, if you are in the position where you have a 2006 4.0 6 speed Wrangler, this will hopefully help if you want to cut out all your PCM and engine connectors... I will be making notes for my plans for everything.

@Apparition is planning to do basically the same thing I think so this might help him out.

I just scrolled up and looked again at what you posted, didn't look like that earlier. Nice job that will come in handy.

I should be able to show you exactly what I did once I make sure it works, but as of now I think I have the wiring figured out. That diagram posted is missing one C3 connection that I found that will be very important, pin 23 which is the brake switch signal. This will have to run to a normally closed relay to TCC which unlocks when brakes are pressed (needs 12V when not pressed, 0 when pressed).

Since the LS harness will control fuel and I need a relay for TCC on LS harness, I’m going to use the fuel relay and use the normally closed terminal. I also plan to drop the ASD as it only seems to kill fuel. For now I’ll just pull it’s fuse.

Edit after testing:
B15 GR/WT does not send 12v+ as I assumed. I switched this relay around and used it to interrupt negative. Test your TCC wire, make sure 12V until brake is pressed.

While it looks insignificant, every wire has been depinned from the PDC that is not needed, fuel relay is now NC and labeled to connect to the brake switch for TCC. I kept a few wires that I want to verify with power they aren’t needed. I should only be about 1-2 hours of wiring work to run the 4.8 (wiring wise).

Tomorrow I will hook up 220v to my welder so I can weld in the mounts and start putting new seals in motor.

Not much to post about. Motor mounts are welded in, engine should be done this week. Transmission should be ready in the next 1-2 weeks.

I’m surprised how bad my original 5.3 was, only usable parts are throttle body, water pump, and alternator. Goal is startup this month. I’ve been digging into tuning some, I think I can get it dialed in pretty well myself (fortunately have a pretty good setup from my last LS car).

Great Jeep weekend…. Or maybe nothing got done.

However engine is within hour or two of being ready to go in, hoping whole driveline minus some accessories will be in this week. Probably need to get back to taking some photos.

Sitting behind those trees makes your TJ look strange…

🙂

Not sure how my photo taking got so terrible, maybe oil film on the lenses.

Regardless, engine has all new seals, lifters, and pushrods. Lapped the valves too.

Trying to get the driveline in for what is hopefully the final time this week.

Unfortunately the weekend is booked helping my dad build a garage. Goal is to drive this next month, still ambitious but I think I can do it.

A tip if you plan to LS swap (or really any major project), don’t make ridiculous timelines. I would have loved to have spent at least 2x the time I did cleaning, painting, etc. I don’t think it will be a massive regret but I wish things looked brand new.
