Hey all, kinda new here. I bought a 2006 LJ a while back, and it has almost everything I want, except a Sub. That being said, I know almost next to nothing about electronics and wiring. Now, I don't mind buying a higher-end sub and amp kit from Kicker or something, but I would rather get an OEM center console that I can use, that way I don't have to find a spot to put a sub that may take some trunk space. I've found a few center console inserts online here and there, but I'm having trouble finding the wiring harnesses that I'd need to use to connect the sub to the head unit. I've also read that the OEM sub connects to the four speakers already installed??
I'm very new to wiring and would love some overall guidance. If you guys have a better idea as to where to put the sub/amp, that would also be helpful.

I did check under the cup holders and console and I did not see any pre-existing wiring harnesses.

Go to Resources on here and pull up the FSM for it. Has all the wiring diagrams. The parts book is there as well.

I am not sure and I do know someone here will be but I would have thought all LJ's as the "upscale" version with no base model, rear Dana 44 etc etc would have had a sub from factory. Are you sure there is not one? Mine was disintegrating so didnt work but it was there. I replaced it with a Kicker using the factory amp and am very happy with the setup.

With the factory setup wiring from all 4 speakers gets routed to the amp (also in the console) then there are four wires (two each positive/negateive) that go from amp to sub. Many replacement subs are dual voice coil so it's a simple hook up. This is a picture of my sub console insert with a kicker sub installed.

The wiring harness you would need for oem install is the cross body harness. It runs along the dash from right to left and connects to almost everything. It includes the fuse panel under the glovebox. You have to remove the dashboard to replace it. An aftermarket type install might be better if you don't mind that sort of thing.

I got the proper year harness and console and sub/amp for my Jeep but decided not to do it, even though I had the dash off. Just more stuff to break and have problems with. I like no console because it gives you more interior room too.

Yeah, I'm pretty certain. The center console goes down to the base, with no sub or anything. I checked under the cupholders as well and didn't see any wiring, so I think I'll have to manually wire them all. Thanks for the help!

I wouldn't mind an aftermarket wiring system, but I wanted to keep the OEM speaker set up so I don't lose room in the back with a tailgate sub or something. Not only that, it's much much harder to steal the sub inside the console when the top and doors are off versus when it's in the back in my opinion. Thank you for letting me know about the cross-body harness though!

If you find a console with a subwoofer insert it will work great as a place to mount a sub. Then wire up an amp that is mounted under the steering column and you should be in business.

I would go with the aftermarket amp option. I replaced the factory sub with the one above and it does do a nice job for rounding out the sound but another 25-50 watts over the factory amp would be nicer to drive that IMHO. I am not sure if the factory radio rolls off the bass at the higher volume but it does seem like it.

PS- Hello from the next town over.

There are many options in addition to a console sub. Technically, the console speaker is 6.5”, which is not really a sub to begin with. However, I’ve had one and it wasn’t too bad. The wiring is weird.

Another option is a self powered sub. Kicker, Rockford Fosgate, Kenwood, and Sound Ordnance make them in 8”. You can mount them in the console, under the rear seat on floor, under rear seat on bottom of seat, and sometimes under the passenger seat.

You can build a slimline box that fits under the rear seat and buy a slimline sub with an external amp like the Soundstream Nano Picasso (5-channel) to run all your speakers.

I’ve had all these options and like the last option best.

sorry to dig up an old thread but i am dealing with this same question and i think you have the answer im looking for. to clarify what you’re saying, Jeep made 2 different cross body harnesses? one with a pigtail for subwoofer wiring and one without. that would definitely be a bummer, i was really hoping i could buy the oem sub box, get the jumper wire for the amp and then just plug it in behind the dash and be good to go
