I've a OEM center console with the sub enclosure and a standard center console with the plastic basket I've seen vids of people modifying to accommodate a subwoofer. The end goal is to fit the subwoofer into a Tuffy center console with the sub option. Lastly, is the OEM amp that came with the sub worth reusing? Input be greatly appreciated.

Anyone know how many watts this OEM subwoofer amp is?

The OEM amp is just powerful enough for a 6" sub woofer. Quadratec sells an OEM quality replacement sub, but Kicker makes one that size that is a little better at a similar price.

I modified the the sub box on mine to fit an 8" kicker subwoofer, lots of Dremel work and had to remove the stock amp and mount an aftermarket amp under the steering column. Search the forum, lots of info on this.

I ended up getting rid of the subwoofer and replaced it with a full size Tuffy console without the speaker. I prefer more storage. It was nice and tidy, but if I had to do it again, I would just buy an all-in-one subwoofer/amplifier box and mount it somewhere in the back. I ended up with permanent hearing damage in my right ear from having the subwoofer so close in the center console.

When I bought my TJ the sub was blown and I took the chance on the Quadratec replacement and also installed an Alpine HU with much better RMS. I drove with no sub for a few weeks and the stock HU and it was awful. The sub helped a lot, and then the aftermarket head unit made it good.

More, clean power from the HU, and that sub (and I assume stock speakers) sound great - or at least I haven't blown anything yet after a year of using it. I think the OEM amp amplifies the incoming, so in that case, it was worth it to keep it in place - otherwise I'd put a small class D in its place.

I still have the stock HU in my 04 Sahara. The sub speaker was blown when I got it, probably like all of em at this point if they've never been replaced. I replaced it with a similar sized kicker unit and it works well enough with the OEM amp.

Now, I just (as in the last 20 miinutes) purchased new HU for my Apex as the factory unit is dead and the wife wants streaming, hands free calling and all that stuff. I've already replaced the stock sub with a kicker, so I'm curious to see how an aftermarket HU works with the factory sub and amp.

"I think the OEM amp amplifies the incoming" - agree with this- since my new, much more powerful head unit went in, the sub is louder and and seems to have more low end
