2001 Jeep Wrangler camshaft synchronizer broke

I have a 2001 wrangler 4.0, engine turns over will not start. I removed the camshaft sensor and the head of the synchronizer is broke in pieces. What could cause this?

That’s not what I thought you meant by cam synchronizer. But I have no theories on how that happened. Probably made the jeep stop going though.
 
Damn that broken part is hard to find. The Mopar parts guide says it's p/n 4897023 but that only brings up the top sensor itself, not what is broken. Not even Rockauto.com shows it.

I'd call Davey's at https://daveysjeeps.com/ who has Jeeps in the back lot they can pull it out of. That p/n doesn't show up in a Search there but they should be able to pull one for you.
 
I assumed he was going to bed to replace the whole OPDA (that’s what we call the non-distributor shaft there, right?)
