2006 engine in a 2001

Hey everyone. I currently have a 2001 4.0 that I plan on swapping out with a 2006 4.0. I understand that there are some differences as far as the sensors go that I need to swap over. Like the cam synchronizer. I see that the map sensor is different but I’m not sure if it will plug in and work. Any info would be appreciated before I go swapping this motor. Thanks

In 1997-1999 the 4.0 TJs came with distributors. In 2000 they switched to coil packs and a camshaft synchronizer. That carried on until 2004, and then in 2005 they switched to the infamous OPDA.

Some people have asked about block interchangeability, as well as swapping a distributor or camshaft synchronizer from an earlier model into a later model TJ.

The tone wheel on the 2005 and 2006 models is different. The 2005 and 2006 computer will not work with the prior years due to the different pulse patterns.

That's some of the information I've compiled.

I would really love if someone who has done a fair number of TJ engine swaps would do a write-up for all of us that details what needs to be modified / changed when it comes to swapping one year of TJ engine into another year of TJ.

That would be an invaluable resource if we could compile that information into one thread.

I thought I had some pictures of my 4 angry squirrels before I'd done hte V-8 swap but can't find them. I sort of remember something holding the wiring on the rear of the engine but it's been too many years so am not sure.

If I find the pictures I'll post them up...

Stuff 4 extra cylinders into a TJ engine bay makes everything tight to get at...
