Novak Conversions Jeep Wrangler TJ engine mounts
Central to my evolving build philosophy is clean setups. Why even do the project if you’re going to half ass it? I’ve had to go back and clean things up more than a dozen times. I think it was @mrblaine telling me about non-insulated butt connectors and how to properly sheath my engine harness that got me to start slowing down and thinking things through.

I was tired of the handheld GMRS units and because Moab trip is around the corner I researched the forum. A lot of praise for the Midland MXT275, so I asked for one for Christmas. Nobody got it for me so I just bought one a few weeks ago.

There are some good ideas out there for install. One is to install a Cat 5/6 female plug in the dash in place of one of the 12V plugs. I stole that brilliance.

Another good idea is the install of the base unit in the driver footwell up on the wall. There’s nothing there and it just fits and you can still detach it from the bracket rather easily. I stole that idea too.

The biggest issue for me is the antenna. Remember “clean” installs is right at the top of what I’m trying to accomplish. I read a lot about antennas and lots of people trying other antennas but getting really good SWR readings from the small magnetic mount that comes with the unit. I’m not planning to use it for anything but trail comms, so I set out to find a spot.

I don’t want the wire showing, so I tried the stock radio antenna solution and that sucks for more than one reason. Rear driver corner inside sucks. Rear corner outside corner sucks to me because I don’t want the bracket sticking off my driver back corner. I’ve always hated those though I have one in the attic from the CB days.

I asked @bobthetj03 if I could mount it inside the cowl and have sufficient signal for trail comms. He thought it would be fine. So, I went to work finding a way to get the 3/4” connector from inside the cowl to inside the firewall and to the base unit. On the driver side inside the cowl up high the windshield wiper motor wires pass through a grommet. I discovered that if you go just below that and not next to it (where it’s a double layer of metal) you can drill a hole there. I had a 1” grommet and was able to get the hole drilled. It turned out like this.

Then all I had to do was decide which hole in the cowl vent I wanted to poke a small hole in for the antenna to stick through. It’s about 2/3” taller than the cowl. It really turned out great and everything works.

Now I can unplug the walkie talkie portion and stow it away until I need it on a trail. View attachment 592753

Yep. Math. He’s in Calc IV now. going for mechanical engineer.

Tonight I was like, “hey, I did something cool!“ He was like, “OK. Uh huh.”“ 🤣

That's awesome!! Great that he enjoys it, it can be interesting and lots of people really don't so it could give him a serious leg up!

Being a "real" engineer is cool... If he was going more direct math route I was gonna recommend the MAA MathFest, it's a fun event for people that are math lovers and cheap for students. I loved it when I went

Maybe he’d be interested. He certainly loves the discussions he strikes up with me when he’s explaining some math thing. Ya never know. This kid was very unlikely to go this route. I’m very proud he’s studying so hard.

His brother is a genius and signed up to work all day as an electrician apprentice. Proud of him too, but sometimes I worry that he sold out. Could do anything he wanted. If this is what he wants, great, but it sure is cold these mornings wiring houses.
 
I had been looking for a solution to the Midland Mic Plug, so when I replaced the 12V plug on the center with the Cat 6 plug for the Mic, it left free the 12V plug.

My plan was to move it to the back seat area so I could plug an electric cooler in without having to plug it into the dash. So, I got that done today. And I have a small overland electric cooler on order for day trips. I have the stock plug cap somewhere, but need to find it.

I’m still fixing problems from poor choice mods like the MetalCloak TB. Since I drilled out the axle side bracket and now I have the Currie with the small Clevite bushing, the bolt has been coming loose. I had hoped there was enough material for clamping force, but I was wrong.

@All 4 Wheelin' gave me some good advice as we discussed solutions and I welded some 1/8 on the front of the bracket. I also had to do a few tack welds in the rear hole to close it off partially.

It’s way stronger now. I used some weld primer between the sheet metal and got it all painted. I forgot to take a pic. Tomorrow I’ll add it to this post.

I also etched some marks on the back of the bolt head and nut to so they’re like a lock nut. Should be enough to hold it by friction at 55ft-lb.

Hammer a piece of copper pipe flat and clamp it behind the hole. Weld it smaller and then drill it to spec.the copper won't stick.

Or get the jj end that takes a larger bolt?

The copper plate was my original idea, but weld is very hard and we figured reinforcing it with sheet metal would be easier. It’s also hard to drill straight on there without removing the TR and Drag Link. I hadn’t intended to do all this yesterday, but when I found the bolt loose I just couldn’t not fix it.

This one is marketed to the overland crowd. It has 4 loops and straps for anchoring it to the rig. With a 12V plug in the back now I can plug right in. It came with AC and DC plugs and so far I really like this unit. Control panel is easy to use and it gets down to temp quick (60-32 in about 15 minutes). Only cost $206 all in.

I like this size of this one. I almost asked which you got earlier. Super interested to see how it looks in your jeep and how you mount it. I need a better cooler, but these are getting so cheap that I'm thinking I ought to just get one of these instead.

I need to do this on my Mustang. I’ve got a 3” cat back system with 5” round, straight through, Borla mufflers at the back. Its sounds awesome (maybe too awesome) but also drones around 2K.

I’ve got an off-road x pipe and borla stinger cat back on mine. It’s loud, my neighbors hate me. I don’t notice any drone though.

My neighbors probably don’t love but are definitely used to all my obnoxious vehicles. What diameter pipes do you have? 4.6? NA or boosted?
