I'm looking for a tire solution. I REALLY like my pintlers...and don't really want to give them up. However, I find that going to a 15" tire in the 35" diameter variety is WAY cheaper to buy tires for...like almost enough to be able to afford the new wheels. But, keeping the 17" wheels, I found a couple options...

Option 1 I found a set of blems on Interco's site. SuperSwamper TSL/SXII in a 35 x 10 x 17.

Pros....
  • Probably one of the best tires for the wheeling I end up doing...Michigan is muddy and there isn't any way around that.
  • They are also decent tires in other terrain, from what I hear.
  • Tall and skinny (this might or might not be a pro)
  • SUPER aggressive looking.
  • relatively inexpensive (like less than 200 a tire).
CONS
  • Bias Ply...means its gonna be stiff. Not sure I'd get much flex out of it and I'm not sure how the road manners are
  • SUPER aggressive looking...Gonna be loud on road
  • Flat Spots from sitting?
  • Balance issues
  • Roundness issues
These are perceived cons. I've never run bias ply tires or anything Interco makes. Maybe they have figured out how to make them how to make them round? For as much as I want to wheel all the time, I really spend WAY more time on the road than off road. I don't want to drop 1000 plus on tires then hate them.

Option 2

Kenda Klever RT in a 35 x 10.5- 17. This is a Radial tire that is a Hybrid All terrain...not as open tread as a traditional MT but more aggressive than an AT. Also skinny. Also inexpensive (about 220 a tire from wally world).

Pros
  • On road should be decent.
  • Radial tires ride, balance, wear better
Cons
  • Looking at the tread, not sure they are going to work in the mud...at least not the mud we have here which is really sticky and will plug up an AT tire quicker than Joe Biden forgets his lines.
  • Kinda boring looking. They aren't bad, but they don't "speak" to me.

The third option is that my buddy that I'm "borrowing" 35's from now gives me a killer deal on the tires and I buy new 15" wheels to go with them. They are Cooper SST Pros in the typical 35 x 12.5-15 variety. Its a good looking tire, they don't have many miles on them and I think they would be fine...except they don't fit my Pintlers.

I have no input, but the Joe Biden remark made me laugh!

Like an angry wife they will. Long, loud, and constantly. 🤣
That's part of the problem... I'm already hearing about it for going to 35s... She's short and complains about getting in, EVERY TIME! Hoping the tires might drown out the noise...

I have about 300 miles on the same size Kendas. So far I am really pleased. They are more aggressive in person, at least to me. Good luck!

2005 LJ, 4.0l, 6-speed. Has a Quadratec 3.5” lift, (closer to 4.5”). Wheels are Vision Manx 398 17 x 8.5. 5x4.5 with 4.75 backspace. I addedhub centric spacers as these are 83mm bore and the Wrangler has a 71.5 mm bore. Probably unnecessary but those things bug me. Currently waiting on an Advance Adapters SYE kit, new Tom Woods driveshafts front and rear. It’s a work in progress.

Great looking LJ! How about one from the front? Would like to see how far they stick out. I'm not a huge fan of flinging mud all over the place. I have a 4" backspace wheel, so not quite the same, but close

The factory flares cover all but 1.75” of the tread. I plan to buy some Rubicon flares that should cover them completely. The Jeep is currently covered in my driveway awaiting parts. I lunched the rear driveshaft the other day.

Did you see the Toyo’s Blaine mentioned a few days ago? I think they were 35x11r17’s and weighed only 64lbs.

General Grabber X3 makes a 35x1250x17 in a C load.
Hmm... Will have to investigate. I've found quite a few tires that will work... There are a lot of 35 x 12.5 x 17s. Most of them are $$$ though... Like 100 dollars more a tire than the equivalent tire in a 15" wheel.

If you’re doing some serious off roading in sticky mud I’d say go with the Swampers. However I’m running the Cooper SST Pros on my TJ and they’ve been great, yet to let me down, but they will cake over in some nasty mud still a strong contender IMO.

I also have the Kendas on my JT and have been happy with them with the light off roading I’ve done so far. They are more aggressive in person but will definitely hold mud and rocks. First two pictures are them brand new. The other show them with 12,000 miles on them. Still holding strong, wearing great.

Have you considered the Goodyear Wrangler MTR in a 275/80-17? It’s a size that piqued my interest for a Toyota I was considering before buying my TJ.
