Replacement starter

Mopar if you can find it. Make sure to avoid cheap store brands or cheap online brands. If you need it right away I'd probably go to NAPA and get their premium/best replacement.

Before replacing the starter; have you checked the condition of the brushes and brass slip rings.
Cleaning the slip rings and replacing brushes are a cheap fix if you are mechanically inclined.

I've looked into rebuilding the starter and as I read it sounds very similar to my Warn winch motor that I cleaned up and rebuilt. I'm curious if that is basically what is inside the starter case. Is there a commutator and an end piece with brushes and a magnet? Probably my most important question I have is "do I just need new brushes and to clean it up to get it in good working order again?

My Jeep wouldn't start when I was (ironically) leaving the auto parts store. I started going through my mind ignition switch, actuator, starter, fuses, battery. The battery checked out. The fuses I swapped didn't change anything. I tapped the starter a few times with a hammer and it fired right up. I read that the hammer trick works because the brushes are stuck and you're just knocking them loose. May work a few times. I went ahead and bought a starter ($220 😬), but I'd rather rebuild this one. Thanks for any help

Remove the starter from engine, loosen starter wire from solenoid, remove two long bolts to remove rear cover to access the brushes attached to mounting plate then slide the mounting plate from the shaft to expose the slip ring. Replace brushes and clean the slip ring. Can't hurt to blow out the dust before reassembling.

You need to verify that fits your 2005, but yes that should work.

It’s hard bc this part isn’t common as far as I can tell. Most like Rock Auto just sell full units. This is the note below the item. Says it fits!

I did not have a vehicle selected. I used the search query "Chrysler starter motor brushes" and it returned a lot of starter brushes for Chrysler products.

As I said, you would need to check with someone at the store to find if any would fit your starter. I used to work at NAPA and other parts stores and found the computers don't always give accurate results for component parts like that, but the old timers typically know what will work.

Hate to say this but good luck finding an old timer parts guy these days!

Might be better off running the starter to an automotive electrical shop. We've got one in town with an 80 year old who rebuilds starters and alternators.

The other option is compare the existing brushes to possible replacements to find a match.

Kinda like using a Motorcraft FL1A oil filter on your 4.0. The catalog doesn’t list it as fitting, but if you look at the specs it’s a match.
