4.8 Swap LJ

Nothing I think. You're prioritizing making it run!

It’s a calculated risk. I have to spend $7,000 for “guaranteed” quality engine. However it 1.5+ multiplies the horsepower which only adds complications. Or I spend $7,000 for a reliable 300hp engine which I refuse. Perhaps I need to call shops next week and get the 5.3 in.

Though I really just need this 4.8 to limp along, with the hope it does well. If it can run well enough to test drive and proof everything else that is a massive win. I can order a crate engine and get everything else worked out. I haven’t exactly spared any expense besides the engine (as I am just looking for a stock truck engine).

I should've quoted you, I was mostly commenting on the bit where you were wishing you could've done more cleaning and such.

That is a bit of a pickle I'm sorry you're having so much bad luck with your engines. Hopefully you could at least find a reliable machine shop to do it?
What I wouldn’t do to be drunk in Colorado right now….

I did have a couple locally brewed root beers tonight 😎

No worries. The original 4.8 I was buying was done at a reputable shop. I cannot blame them though as it was raced a season. It just made me hesitate to pump thousands into an engine just to be disappointed. Basically I am 5 years late on this project as a brand new GM 5.3 would be awesome, however they aren’t a thing anymore.

There is a lot of unknowns here that while it seems stupid, a motor swap really is just a weekend of work.

I decided to prime and paint the transmission. I was thinking grey but saw this enamel paint. I thought it would be a little lighter than machinery grey. Behold the blingy 4L60E.

Yeah I guess it is what it is. At least you do have a shop you know will do it then, they're hard to find out here. Just that time crunch of yours.

Maybe if you're not an idiot 🤣 took me years in another car. A weekend be crazy, even your timeline would be crazy for me. It's pretty awesome you can get it done so fast

Well, this shop did the work for my friend, and they aren’t fast. If and when it comes to it I’ll have to find an engine that is done.

I mean an engine swap on a proven platform. You or I could swap a good engine of the same exact type into a normal vehicle in a weekend. That doesn’t mean it has to be fun.

I’ve seen plenty of claims that LS swaps into Jeeps are a week job and sub $2,000. I think I’m getting to 5x the cost and more multiples of time.

I've seen it said a LS can be done for $5K but I think it's a bit more than that unless you can score a lot of stuff for CHEAP...

Now if you're doing a 02 & older and using a Magnum engine you could have done one for under $2K 10 years ago but now? Finding a running 5.2 or 5.9 with under 150K miles is pretty rare now.

To do a Hemi swap properly it's $10K or more.

And then part of this depends on what axles you're staring with and what your final outcome is.... If you want 1 tons & 40's that's added price.

If you've already got bigger axles & larger tires that's a whole other thing...

Okay yeah I see what you mean. Definitely a different ballgame.

Haha yeah. Same as the plentiful and cheap Kswaps people talking about. Maybe once upon a time (still doubt) but not anymore

I just have to bolt the converter to the flex plate and it should be ready to go in tonight.

I really need to get the shifter plan figured out. I have a stock auto shifter, but not sure I love everyone saying its a major pain in the ass. Lokar is an option but many people complain about it. Winters is best function but I don’t like the look of it.

I like the B&M TJ shifter but it seems the gate doesn’t work well for the 4l60.

Hopefully a multi year home for this. Very happy with how everything looks setting angle of engine/trans,tcase 2 degrees less. Waiting on a couple studs arriving tomorrow then transfer case goes in, measure for driveshafts. While it may not look it, phase one of wiring tests isn’t crazy far off.

Looks good sitting in there..

If you're keeping your stock center console then I'd agree a Winter shifter wouldn't look good in there. I wonder if you could adapt the B7M shifter to work with the 4l60? I've had LOADS of fun getting my Winter shifter to work with the 46RE & then the 545RFE...

What are the complaints you've heard about with the Lokar?

I will be keeping stock console. To be honest I don’t know that I recall a specific complaint besides something like “it’s a pos”. I do really like the look of them.
