Hi all,
My first post, so apologies if this specific situation has been discussed. My 97 TJ Sport has been experiencing a gas gauge fluctuation. It seems to only occur
when the gauge is at 1/4 or lower.
As I come to a stop, the gauge will go to E and then return to its normal level once at a complete stop or when I begin to accelerate. If I fill the tank past 1/2 the gauge movement
does not happen. I did replace the fuel pump about 10k-15k miles ago. I could not tell you the manufacturer. I do know it was not a Bosch, which it seems most here recommend.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Mine reads full for a couple days, moves slowly to 3/4 tank, drops quickly to 1/4 tank, and when it hits E and lights up on the dash I still have 5 gallons left.

I fill it at 1/4 (1/2 tank) or E (3/4 tank).

I would rather it be like this than my last car which stayed at full for a long time and moved slowly. If it dinged E you had better be near a gas station because you may not make it. I got into a habit of filling that thing when it read 1/2 but took 3/4 tank.

I don't have a sloshing issue with the gauge, but it doesn't read correctly.

Thanks CJ. That was my initial thought. My concern was/is that since it only started to happen recently,
it might be a sign that the pump is beginning to fail.

I wouldn't be worried about the pump (for these reasons, anyway), it's most likely the sender, or possibly the float is no longer floating on top and is now subject to the motion of the ocean. Although I thought there were baffles in the tank to minimize the sloshing.
