I’ve searched some other threads but I’m not sure I found one with this exact issue.

Took a little day trip today and my Jeep was a little less than 1/4 tank full so I stopped to fuel up. Put the nozzle in and it clicked off after only 5 gallons. I started up the jeep and the gauge was showing 3/4 full.

Why would this be? I didn’t want to continue trying to pump in case it was full and the gauge is wrong. Hard to believe it only took 5 gallons though.

Anyone gone through something similar? Any easy vent or valve I can check that may have made it click early?

Any way I can test a sending unit without having to drop the tank?

Is there any chance the gauge is accurate and the pump is just clicking earlier due to splash back/pressure in the tank due to clogged vents?

This right here. Good chance. Did it spit some gas back at you?

Replace the fuel pump too while you have it apart.

No gas spitting. Just the pump clicked off early. This thread would imply that my fuel gauge is accurate though, and it’s a splashback issue.

Guess I actually am almost out of gas then haha

It’s an easy fix if you are handy and have tools. Just takes some time to drop the tank. Run the tank as low as you dare before you start. Recommend you have a way to pump out the remaining fuel once you have the tank out. Makes it much easier to lift the tank back into place if the tank is empty. A floor jack is invaluable.
