My wife and I just got home from spending the week in Pismo. Great weather, great time. Had lunch at the Firestone Walker Brewery in Paso Robles today. Didn't take the Jeep, but cruised the dunes in our F150 4x4.
We love the area as well. We're thinking of keeping an RV down there to use as our summer home.

I can't believe there are beaches in California you can drive on at all. ALL our public beaches have been closed to motorized vehicles...except one state park.
the watermelons are continually trying to shut Pismo down to vehicles

We just spent 3 days after settling some affairs with my sister in Salinas and took the PCH north. Stayed in Capitola, then bought a $10 pass to visit the State Parks along the way, staying in Half Moon Bay on night 2. We visited 8 state parks along the way. Some really cool RV parks right on the beach was awesome! If you are used to city life, it would be pretty sweet. Being north of the gate, and pretty much finding most people totally fucking crazy, I wouldn't go south of the gate unless I had to.

They've been trying to close down Pismo to vehicle use for years. Same shit is happening in Oregon too. Go to Florence or Coos Bay and there is miles of dunes to run on. I use to go down 3-4 times a year with my quad.

Who’s “they”? I love to ask this question. I think it’s the assholes.

They are those who think because they don't like to recreate like we do it shouldn't be allowed. They are the same ones who tell you that you can't own a gun because they don't like them and are scared of them.

Could it be the same "they" who want to close hunting areas while the hunters are actually paying for the majority habitat reclamation though fees?

True Story: Literally had a lady personally tell me one time how she couldn’t believe how anyone could hunt and kill animals and how wrong it was when you can go to any grocery store and buy meat.

I was speechless and just walked off.

It would be funny if it was just a one off. I swear people think food just magically appears on shelves. They somehow don't realize that farmers, farm labor, drivers, and grocery workers are behind the scenes to make the system work. (Hell I probably missed 5 steps, distribution center etc....)

Not to mention the butcher who uses the same tactics as a hunter to kill the animal. Kinda... At least the deer I shot have the opportunity to get away! Cows are chained down or fenced in and shot in the head with a 22

Or a high pressure bolt gun. There’s a reason there are laws prohibiting filming of the factory farm industry. And yet hunting, where a clean kill is a matter of pride for a good majority of hunters, is somehow inhumane.

Growing up on a beef farm, I’ve long held the belief everyone should witness or kill a cow with a 22. It’s an experience significantly different than hunting.

Interesting that it's so different. I enjoy hunting, clean kill is the name of the game. So far I've never lost a deer in 9 years of hunting. My son or I lost a hog. We don't really know which because we both shot at the same time and one went down quick. Followed the others blood trail for a long way, ended up taking a coyote while we were looking for the hog, then he took a doe. That was a remarkably fun 3 hours. We hauled the hog, doe, and coyote back on a cargo carrier behind the Jeep. 🤓

10-15’ from an animal that isn’t going to run and stares at you. 22 to the brain, instant lights out and 1200-1500 lbs hits the ground like a sack of quikrete. Then throat slit and gallons of blood pumped out.

Local locker would shoot them at our farm winch them into the back of their truck head hanging out and blood dripping on the road for miles. Now you haul them to the locker and put them in a pen and they do their thing the next morning.

But still, that lights out of something of that size is a different feeling. I’ve done the same to hogs and it’s nothing close. I’ve also killed around 100 whitetails in my life and it’s just a different scenario all together.

A good exercise. I can do that, but that's because I know what it costs to live, a life for a life. Many people re-coil at that idea.
