Have 31 inch tires on my 99 tj. Found someone who wants to trade his 33's . 15 in wheels. I think I have a 3 inch lift. Any thoughts , will it be less stable?
Thanks for any help

Stability isn't an issue if the tires are in good shape...

Gearing is your #1 concern , 3" of lift should work, but don't let me be the last say on that height . I have 33" tires with 3.5" of lift.

... the 32RH Auto can pull them if you have 3:73 gears I think... someone needs to chime in ....I'm a little out of school on this possibly.

@Jerry Bransford has had that tranny and knows it's parameters better.

You have the (preferred) 32RH auto. The stock gearing in my 2001 32RH is 3.07, but you may have different. I’m not sure of all the ratios available. Ideally for 33s with the 32RH you want to run 4.10 gearing.

If your ready to invest a lot of money to get those 33” tires ready for your jeep.. go for it.. but if not.. I’d stay with the 31s.. geometry, stability, drive ability, comfort tend to change once you get up to 33s.. not hard to do, but can cost a lot more then just free tires

Stick with the 31's. Trust me on this.
Bob knows the Rabbit hole can have things other than Rabbits.

I have 2 Rubicons...I have an 06 on 2" of lift and 31.5 inch tires more or less and an 03 on 33's and 3.5" when the hard top is on ...what it takes to run 33's well is way more than the 31.5's.

33's-

Tires- 1000.00
Gears 1750.00
Track bars 500.00
Control Arms - 800
Shocks 200
Sway bar links 260.00

31.5 -

Tires -1000.00
Shocks 200.00

That's it. I did a few things because I wanted to , like jks sway bar links, but running 31's is sane...i still think that had been figured out when the Rubicon was released, and influenced the 31" tire size they chose .....That's Andy talking, not a hard fact.

To do 33's properly it's going to cost you, probably more than you think. Even the cheaper ways can add up fairly quick. I suggest plenty of figuring, Mainly about the jeep and what your main focus with it will be. Having said that I am currently hoarding parts for an eventual transition to 35's. Best of luck.

Shocks look a little light morel like 500 +/-
Lockers add another 1500 plus
Alignment 100 plus if you don't need any ball joints ect
Swing away tire carrier bumper cause your gonna need one 500-1200 for the bigger tire
HD tie rods and drag link
5 Tires probably 1000 to 1500 mounted and balanced includes spare

here is what I spent and my jeep already had the HD Draglink and Track Bar some of these items may not apply to your set up
This is parts only I did all the labor

Those are all realities.

I run Rancho 5000x . They are reasonable at 50 a shock.

Tire size doesn't dictate lockers...but it becomes..."well, while I'm at it....". I buy Rubicons for the lockers and 4:1, so I pay up front.

I agree with scaling up the steering. I did that on my 03 . It's not essential to make it work Day1 , but a good consideration long term. At least buy Moog.

The cost of a spare, rim, and way to transport it is an eye catcher....one reason you see jeeps with no spare or a donut they can't use running around.

Good post. You will spend more usually..... especially if you get into an "upgrade" groove like I did on my 03. It just became an obsession nearly.

One thing people miss is other costs they don't know about lying dormant... brakes, rotors, cooling system.... Most everything mechanical made has a maintenance cycle or lifespan ...people often put what they want to do at the front, spend most of the money, then have to deal with have to's. That can be tough.

We are all married. As far as listing it on here, we spent $10.
