Idaho, anyone?

Looks like a beautiful area.

And if you plan on taking a UHaul, it's a good thing you have a hard top. If I remember right, they don't allow you to tow with a soft top.

Recently I was referred for a Geologist position at Salmon Challis National Forest. Didn't think much of it.

Friday, I got an email requesting references. Little surprised as I'd never gotten a request before. So I typed up.a doc and sent it in. Less than an hour later I got word from two of my references they'd been interviewed.

Color me surprised!

So, anyone here familiar with the area? About 2200 miles from where I currently live.
I live within the Salmon Challis National Forest. :ROFLMAO:

Do you know where you want to look I can help hook you up with some local realtors.
I do not yet, no. I haven't been contacted to schedule an interview or anything, so I'm going to wait until then.

Appreciate your help!!! :)

The main branch for the Salmon Challis National Forest is in Salmon, but there is an office in Challis as well. Salmon and Challis are about 57 miles apart on Highway 93, a 2 lane highway that, for most of the distance, runs parallel to the Salmon River. As far as looking online for rentals in this area, you're probably not going to have much if any luck using the usual search engines for rentals. Facebook, if you have it will be a better resource for finding what is available. Particularly the local classified groups. I see listings in those groups for rentals all the time.

So maybe you folks can settle so.ething for a friend and I.

The hiring manager asked for references before trying to schedule an interview.

Do you think I checking g references before interviewing is normal/ok?

My friend says its backwards and rude to check before a job offer is made. Do you agree?

I don't really have an opinion, I'm just doing as asked by them. Lol

It's been my experience that references, if they actually call them, are usually called before an interview, and a job offer after the interview.

Negative, it's perfectly normal. Hiring managers should have the most complete picture of the candidate before the interview, and checking references first isn't out of the norm. The references you provide may very well come up in the interview or if the manager actually talks to any of them that may come up too.

The job offer comes last, it wouldn't make sense to check a candidate's references after the intent to hire has been extended.

Good luck BTW! Hope you get it if it's something you want.

My biggest concern is that I've not studied or done anything geology/mineralogy for almost a year. I'm afraid they'll ask me some question that I'll blank on and shoot myself in the foot...

I'm now scheduled for a telephone interview tomorrow at 11am Mountain time. -anxiety increases-

Telephone interview suck. I've always disliked being on either end of them.

But I've done a bunch... Few tips from my own experience:

Find a QUIET place where you can be alone. If you're in a place where you think you might be interrupted just say something up front like "just want to let you know I'm in xxxxx and if there's too much noise in the background please let me know"

Have a copy of your resume with you... The hiring manager may ask you to talk through it or ask specific questions

Write down the questions as you get them! I've found it's a good way to stay on-point and not ramble off on another tangent.

I can’t remember the format. But most interviews are looking for an answer in which you explain how something you’ve done led to a result.

example, what is one regret you have?

there was this time where....

and this is what I did to correct it ...

and the end result allowed for...

Good luck. 👍

I think the interview went extremely well. They said the decision will be made in the next few weeks and I'd hear back from them in about that timeframe.

It was a panel phone interview with about 7 other people involved, each asking one of those behavioral interview questions. How did you resolve a problem, give us an example of..., etc.

Honestly, I'm feeling really good about the interview. They budgeted 45min and we were done in 30. The last question was if I had any, so I asked about who I would be working under, what sort of proficiency they would expect to qualify for promotion to the GS-9 level, etc.

Fingers crossed folks!
