Idaho, anyone?

Recently I was referred for a Geologist position at Salmon Challis National Forest. Didn't think much of it.

Friday, I got an email requesting references. Little surprised as I'd never gotten a request before. So I typed up.a doc and sent it in. Less than an hour later I got word from two of my references they'd been interviewed.

Color me surprised!

So, anyone here familiar with the area? About 2200 miles from where I currently live.

I'm not familiar with it, but from everything I've read and everyone I've talked to, Idaho seems to be a very desirable place to live these days.

I’m pretty familiar, more so with Salmon but close enough...if you’re a geologist you’ll pretty much be in heaven living so close to Yellowstone NP too, if you’ve never been before it’s going to be a whole new world.

Also you should be able to tow that trailer no prob.

Specifically the opening said it was dealing with minerals and the like.

Responsibilities

• Monitor locatable mineral and mineral material activities to ensure compliance with contractual obligation.
• Communicate with agency personnel, permittees, applicants, company representatives, recreationists, and interest groups regarding agency related geologic topics.
• Inspect mineral operations for compliance with operating plans in accordance with agency standards.
• Prepare report of findings including the collection and analysis or review of geological data.
• Present results of studies, investigations, and reports to support the unit?s management of minerals and geology.

Glad to hear it sounds worthwhile from a career standpoint.

I've been through Salmon many times. Pretty little town, river flows right thru it. Summers can be a little warm but IIRC it is nearly 4000 feet so cools off pretty well at night. Seems to me surrounding areas would be a geologist's paradise from what what little I know on the subject. Home to Bighorns and for many years, Elmer Keith if you like firearms history. Typical Idaho teaming with outdoor recreational opportunities. Better hurry tho. We're filling up fast!~!~!

If you love anything outdoors you'll be in heaven. I've spent a lot of time in and around Boise & Twin Falls and always have a great time. We make several trips up there every year for work and then I take the fam up there a bunch to 4 wheel, fish, camp, etc. Do it!

I’ve been to salmon for hockey tournaments 4 times. I mostly remember the locker rooms being made of plywood and the “glass” for the rink being made of chain link fence.

Not sure if you’d be living in Salmon, but it is a fairly nice town. It is small, but there are a few restaurants and a good breakfast place. If you’re into fishing, it definitely isn’t a bad place to be.

That whole area is nice, but remember that the nearest big box store is going to be in Idaho Falls or Missoula depending on where you’re living. You need to be a specific type of person to like it, which I think most people on this forum are.

I certainly do enjoy fishing and one of the main reasons I am looking to go out west is for outdoors stuff. Jeeping, fishing, hiking g, etc.

What areas should I be looking at for housing? Should I inquire with a realtor?

I'm up near Coeur d'Alene. Looks like that area is over 7 hours south of us. And like 3 or 4 hours from Boise or Idaho Falls. Not many larger cities nearby. Which would explain why your not finding much for housing.

Appreciate the input - but most of those are almost 2hrs away. Did some switching of parameters on there and there really doesn't look like much in the area. Guess if I get to an interview, one of my questions is going to be where should I look for housing. lol
