Auxiliary Transmission Coolers

No concern whatsoever. @KCsTJ did this I believe (at least I think it was him).

If this was the case, your AC condenser wouldn't have been put there by the factory.
Yes it was moi @Chris, good memory!

I installed a very basic Flex a lite cooler in front of the radiator on my TJ.

Not the best pic, that was in Feb. No problems at all. I did use AN6 fittings which is an excellent connector from cooler to hose. No leaks.

I also have an Autometer Jeep tranny temp gauge ready to install, once i get my jeep back drom a 2 month nightmare ive been having with a quote "professional bleeping shop" ugh, more later on that if i still have my sanity
So stay tuned, it will happen :)

Is the current consensus that the fluid temp should be taken in the pan? My plan is to install a temp gauge this fall.

That's the consensus last time I checked, and it's my plan as well to weld a bung in the pan where I can install a temp gauge from.

The pan is where I've installed two of them which I believe to be the most informative location. I installed two senders in my previous TJ, one in the pan and one in the line leaving the cooler selectable by a SPDT switch but ended up just leaving it in the pan sensor position.

Yes. One day I pulled into a random auto tranny repair shop and I asked where to attach the 3/8" bung, which the sensor screws into.
They confirmed what Jerry has stated in prior threads, the best place is in the pan.

Do not use the factory side ports.

I'm having the bung tig welded in the front center.
Will have pics in a week or two.

I've only found one cooler that works as well as my somewhat picky needs dictate. 99.9% of Jeep owners won't run it because it costs almost 400 dollars for a passive cooler. It is the most cooler you can mount in the grill area easily but even then, you will have to pull the V bar to make it a clean installation. It's in a build thread with the Orange TJ Unlimited. I have not found a fan driven under the tub that is worth the money yet.

Blaine, could you tell us what brand/model cooler you used in that build? I searched but could not find the info. Did you have to remove the V support? Also, any thoughts on this setup?

Setrab Slimline series race cooler.

I don't use that other one you listed so I have no idea.

Yes, we remove the V bar to weld tabs to it to mount the cooler to and then put it back.

Thank you for the info. The size looks to be a great fit in the TJ from the photos on the other build thread.

The shop recommended the PSC kit since they use it for both PSC power steering and auxiliary transmission cooler setups they do.

I use that one because it gives me room above it for the extruded coolers we use.

Also, any thoughts on this setup?

I have this one on my red LJ. The fitment is great and it looks great. There was a lot of discussion while back if this would block air from getting to the engine radiator and it was tested and determined that it had no effect on the engine cooling. I highly suggest only using the bracket and swapping the radiators for NPT threads to use AN fittings on. Derale 13613. I don't have any significant miles on it so I can't say for sure if it keeps things cool enough with 37s and a supercharger (Blaine, do you have any experience with the 13 row cooler?).

on the other build thread.

Which build thread is this?

Thanks, much appreciated. Let me look up the 13613. I'm only running 32s on stock 4.0. Other than the fittings, is there any potential issue with the cooler that comes in the kit (8000 series, 13503)?

That photo is from my favorite build thread on the forum.

The cooler itself is fine. The way it's mounted makes it very difficult to get the hoses on which is where the AN fittings help. I also prefer the cosmetics of AN vs hose clamps. The kit comes with grade 8 bolts to secure the coolers to the bracket, I changed those to stainless steel.

If the 13 row cooler is going to be enough for the khaki TJ on 35s but not the LJ, I may swap it over there since it gets a little angry when hot. I expect it to be 90% street, 10% light trail duty so the trans temps should be staying on the cooler side especially if it doesn't leave our climate.

I don't know which 13 row cooler you are referring to.

I don't use them and I wouldn't really care if they were flawless. I don't like the inefficient shape. The Setrab that I use maximizes the width, height, and core thickness for that area in the grill. It also leaves room above it for the use of a steering cooler.

I also prefer the fittings to be oriented so that the fluid can go in the bottom and out the top to push any air out and not leave a section that could get an air lock. That means the 13 row would have to be mounted fittings up, or fittings pointed to the side. Which would again, offend my sensibilities about such things.

I was able to pick one of these fancy coolers up relatively cheap during yesterdays eBay sale. It showed up today.

Just as it looks, it is about double the size of the Derale 9000 13 row. I still think I will be moving the 13 row on the PSC bracket over to the other Jeep since I don't expect it to get nearly as hot ever (less power, smaller tires, no extreme trails, plan to keep it in a relatively cool environment). It does mount on it's side so the air can purge.

That is something I would have liked to have known about. I use those things pretty often.

Unfortunately there was only 1 in stock. In the future, raceplumbing.net has it cheapeat under part 53-10748-01. There seems to be some central inventory across many many stores since everyone went out of stock as soon as I bought it.

I'm about to install the psc trans cooler. 2005 LJ I6 auto .My original trans lines started leaking, so figured I could eliminate the metal tube portions routed close to the block and cats that are leaking. No instructions included with the kit.
My question is which line should go to the cooler? Driver's or passenger side line coming from radiator trans cooler?
