Brandon's Arles Blue TJ

Ok, all 5 done in 1 hour and 33 minutes. That includes help from a 3 year old and having to go in and get a snack. Does not include bolting them on, we've got to go in and give him a break first! Then it'll be time to bolt them on, adjust the pinion angle, and do some test drives. May try to get into the tire shop today for balance if possible.

It's kind of crazy to me how easy they were. All you need is an impact and a torque wrench. It would suck, but you could do it all with a ratchet.

How long do your racelines take?

IDK. I’ll time it next time, but maybe an hour each! Maybe more. That’s taking it from tire off the wheel, putting tire on the wheel, centering the wheel in the bead, putting the ring spacers on, adding the rings, then start putting the bolts in and impacting them down till the ring is touching the ring spacers, and then finishing all 32/wheel torqued to 200in/lb.

I'll give you $25 per wheel...

Jeez even I would pay more than that

I'd give him $30 per! I mean, I have been pretty successful flipping wheels and tires.

Oh yea, I forgot to add, that I didn't even cuss once, or bust any knuckles. That tells you how easy it was! 😂 That and the fact that I was able to do it!

That's about what I figured. That's another thing with these is that you don't have to center the tire because you're clamping both beads down at the same time which makes it self-centering. I lined up the valve stem with one of the two holes through the inner beadlock and that was about the only adjustment I had to make.

I did have to torque to 100ft-lbs though.

We'll see how they balance.

Glad you got them together and will be watching to see how they balance out for you. Since you had these tires mounted already you've got something to compare with.

Yes, "I'm cold" and "I'm tired" every 5 minutes, even though I suggested turning on the heater and sitting in front of it, or laying on my gym bench in front of the heater. But of course, those were silly suggestions that would never work 😑

I don't miss those days... And my daughter had long hair too so would get it caught in the wheels of the creeper at least once a day it seemed like at times.

Dad life means I didn't get done as much as I planned, but here they are! I love them!

Heading to Tahuya with the family tomorrow to try out the new skids and beadlocks. And tow with the new truck for the first time. Supposed to be like 54 degrees and sunny, should be a good day!

Are you working on the 31st? Ive got a foot study I'm doing on the 30th @ the VA. So I could bring the Jeep over on the 29th or park in the lower parking lot maybe... if I towed it over on the 30th.
But either way we could do Tahuya or Reiter on the 31st?

Just a thought.

I'm currently scheduled to work, but I could probably change from that Thursday/Friday off to Friday/Saturday.

Looks like Reiter is about 2 hours, not bad. I'm not familiar with the trails up there other than what bit I've seen on Nate's videos. Looks like it would be a fun place to hit for a day trip.

Let's see where I'm at by next weekend...
My appointment on Friday the 30th will be from 10AM til 2 PM...
But we could meet @ Retier around 9-10AM? Then play until 3ish?
OnX has some of the trails and you can download the maps.

My sister's house is about 35 minutes away from there.

Ok, I'll go ahead and plan to swap my days. I'm working now but text the wife to see if she would be down.

Well, today was the first real hiccup I've had with the Jeep while wheeling, and it was ultimately my fault. Since I've done the skid plates, I haven't had the Jeep out. So we loaded up and went to Tahuya for the day, and the weather was fantastic. The new truck towed great!

We got there and it wasn't busy at all. Got everything loaded into the Jeep and aired down. Tried out 8 today with the new beadlocks and was really happy with how they performed.

We got 10-25 minutes into the trail and I commented that the temp seemed to be a little higher than normal. Turned down Trail 55, and turned the lockers on to climb a little rock pile that I've avoided without an engine skid. First line didn't work because the rear diff hung on a rock. Got repositioned and was really crawling it, when I looked down and saw "Check Gauges" and the temp was in the red. Luckily about that time, I popped up and over the rock onto a flat spot and I killed it (the heat had already been on). I could hear it boiling and just knew it was going to blow a hose or cap. I carefully popped the hood latches without walking around the front but left the hood down so I wasn't exposing myself.

We walked around picking up garbage for 15-20 minutes, while I kept everyone away from the front of the Jeep. I was convinced that the water pump had finally given out and our day was over. Once it was back around 220, I popped the hood. I started wondering if maybe the thermostat had stuck and might work loose. Once it got below 210, I started looking around. I reached over and turned the fan by hand and noticed it was stuck. I thought the clutch or water pump were seized up. Then, it gave way. It turns out, when I put the tummy tuck skid on, it raised the motor enough to contact the bottom of the fan shroud and I never even thought to check it. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I started trying to come up with a plan and broke out the tools. My first thought was to loosen the shroud, and try to lower it. That's when I found out that my passenger upper shroud bolt is 3/8, which I have, but the rest appear to be 11mm which I only had a wrench for and wasn't going to work. My next thought was to lay underneath and cut away the portion of the shroud that was contacting. I had a razor knife, a pocket knife, and a fixed blade knife. None of those were going to be a safe or effective way. That's when I decided that I could take a small adjustable wrench and snap off pieces of the shroud until it cleared. This did the trick! Was it the best option? Of course not, but it worked and we wheeled the rest of the day. Though it did still hit twice, briefly.

So, now the bottom of my shroud looks like it was chewed on by a deranged beaver, and I need to figure out a better solution, or at least trim it up neater. As you can see in the picture, at least I stayed in a positive mood! I need to add some tools to my kit, and something good for cutting plastic wouldn't be a bad addition.

The rest of the day went great, with lots of garbage cleanup! Oh, and I cleaned up all of the little plastic bits I broke off of course!

Oh crap! I forgot that happens with a raised skid. Mine did the same. The trail fix is still there since the day that happened! Sorry that happened, but good job solving it for the time being!
