My chosen method of large cargo hauling... 5 person tent that sets up REALLY fast, and 2 king size cots strapped down.

We'll see as it gets closer. I may go towards something like the first one, or smaller. I've actually watched that video before and it's a neat rack but wouldn't want something so "permanent." I'd like to keep my trektop on, but that's not an absolute requirement.

I just picked up the GR small tailgate rack and would like to figure out a way to put their interior rack in my TJ... But I've got enough other tasks to get done before February.

Good for 100lbs of gear.

Now if I could figure out how to fit this inside... But I know it's not an option for you.

I wonder how it would hold up to rubbing on the trees in Rimrock...

NOT very well at all, at least without some more cross bracing on the top, some angular braces from the rear bottom to behind the door, and maybe some kind of hingeable or quick release cross bracing on the rear.

And then you have to deal with the added height of the bars...

But like with everything, nothing is the One Size Fits All Answer to problems...

It's why I'd love to have a Tent Trax trailer... but how many overnight trips am I really going to take?

I went down to their factory when they were in OR in 2005 and had a custom trailer designed and quote but never pulled the triggerr.

I saw one of these last year and looked into them. I don't know that I had ever seen them, but may have in a magazine at some point. I looked it up and immediately closed the tab when I saw the price. They're cool, but they're proud of them for sure.

If I keep working on my wife right, my solution will be to get her her own Jeep and then we'll have more space!

Here's a used one for $5K

The problem with that is that it's 20 year old canvas that's likely not as sealed as it used to be. And I can buy a lot of gear for $5k

  • Quick-deploy pop-up tent with waterproof material — like new condition
  • Original Tentrax rain fly option included

And a replacement tent is only $650

Like you said, there's no one size fits all.

Nope. But compared to some of the new overlanding trailers these are still better deals... If I thought I'd use it more I'd consider one...

You could also build your own for less.

I've got a small home built "trash" trailer that is begging to be turned into a off road trailer and since I already have a perfect tent for camping, my idea is to have the top of the trailer fold out into a base for the tent to keep the tent up off the ground.

Right now said trash trailer is living its life as a scrap wood/kindling container for when we need to fire up the wood stove in the shop.

Yea, your requirements for sleep setup are a little different unfortunately.

Tent cots are out for me too because I have to run a back seat. We're tentatively thinking a Rubicon trip summer 2027 and I'm already visualizing sleeping gear and other soft items bungeed to the roof, spare tire, roll bar, and anywhere else I can get it! We might look like the Clampetts but have to fit three people inside.

We had three in my LJ for the Rubicon. Nothing up on top. Had all doors and windows with, incase of weather, but they all but the half doors stayed off for the trip. Had my 40L fridge and a Coleman stove for cooking. It’s all in how you pack.

Prepare to get dusty.

I've kind of planned the load out in my head and think I see a way to make it happen. It won't be glamping by any means but I see a way.

Getting dusty and dirty is part of the fun!

Didn't @Woodrow do this for his Rubicon trip?
I did. I used a small aluminum GR rack mounted to some custom bars on my cage. I’ve camped out of the TJ a few times before and its no problem solo or even with 2 people. But this year my wife and the dogs came on the Rubicon trip. No way that could work without a top rack.

A trailer would be tough on the Rubicon, but the extra weight up top (maybe 150#?) was noticeable off camber.

This is the ONLY time I wish for that extra room.....

I've seen guys tow those little TentTrax trailers all over before but I'm sure they'd also gotten used to towing them. And Yes I'd rather have the stuff packed lower around the Jeep... I might be making it harder than it needs to be since I haven't tried tent camping sine my amputation. And again when it's 1-2 days it isn't as big a deal...

Just need to get the Jeep reliable when I feel confident that it can make these trips.
