Wildman's TJ is getting a face lift

Here's the damaged goods...

You can see how the pinon gear was pushing the ring gear away & then breaking the ends of the teeth off.

This was the 2nd gear set

And it Fucked Up the ARB case too... So that added to the regear cost.

And then my last set where it chipped the teeth. This ruined my day... I'd thought I was just gunna change the oil.

It does when you're buying a HP60 thinking it'll hold up to your abuse... Since 1 ton trucks (not many) came with Dana 60 rears... Maybe more 3/4 ton trucks but still I never figured I'd break gears like this.

I'd been using FUBAR & SWAG in the 80's... Along with a whole bunch of other alphabet soup acronyms....

Oh I used FUBAR alot, just never heard SWAG.

I spent 13 weeks at Fort Sill in 84. Then 3 years in the Florida guard and moved back up here and finished the last in the Tennessee guard.

I'm just gonna say being in a combat support company in Florida is the scout platoon taught me way more than being a Chaplins assistant(glorified jeep driver) did in Tennessee.

Wow, I knew you had R&P trouble but didn't realize it was that many times. I sounds like the LP is the way to go, with a big plus being the full float.

Yep, my Jeep has a LONG history of issues.... Just take them all in stride and keep moving forward. I actually had a LP Dana 60 sitting in my garage that I'd thought about installing but I wanted to give the CRD60 one more shot. But now I'm just ready to go full TONS and do the 14B.... Got to emulate Jeff's rig ya know...

I was never a driver... Well not for anyone.. I did drive for the post office one winter as the truck driver.

Is snafu too old?

Nope not too OLD..

Finger crossed that this last regear with the Super60 and load bolt helps And when I sell these axles I'll let the new owner know about when it's been through. But I'm hoping I can get $6K for both axles with the way they are currently built... IMO someone would still be getting a killer deal considering the parts that are in both axles.

But they are stockish width so you really shouldn't be running more than 37" tires with them. And these 38x13.5x17 M/T Baja Pro XS tires are really wide for these axles.

@Wildman, aren’t the trails up here wider now? I don’t know the current situation that well, but I remember when we were in Wenatchee forest that you commented they were wider, trees had been cut down, so with all the JKU’s and Bronco’s running through these trails, what really is the width we can get away with now?

I know some of the trails have been widened but since I only got a chance to run a few trails this year I can't say what they are all like. I still would like to stay as narrow as I can and my current 82" wide is as wide as I'd like/want which again comes back to only running a 65" WMS axle. That is what a stock JK axle is too. JL & JT axles are 68" or 69" wide I think. You can run a rim that's got more back spacing to suck the wheels in some to keep your overall width narrower.
But if you have axles with hubs you have to be careful not to have the hub sticking out past the rim or you run the risk of damaging it...
All tradeoffs like we deal with all the time when you're trying to build these rigs.

Build it for where you wheel 90% of the time. Trying to build it for say Moab or Sand Hollow or JV when you live in the PNW IMO is silly since you maybe get there once a year.

But everyone has their own ideas & opinions.

More on the new axles. I'd forgotten about this option but it's actually cheaper than doing the Solid Axle 5 on 5.5 hubs. And since they're F450 unibearings I doubt I'd ever have issues with them even with 40" tires... Not that I plan to upsize anytime soon.

I know that the picture is an 8 lug but they're offered in a 5 on 5.5 w/ 1/2 x 20 studs.

After discussing shifters with another person who'd done the 8HP70 swap and has the narrow GR center console he'd said that he'd started off with a Challenger shifter but then after driving it for a short time had found out that it was very hard to attempt to shift based on how the shifter is angled. I'd seen these Kilduff shifters before so I already knew about them but figured I'd use the stock shifter to save some money. But then after our conversation about the shifter not really being suited for the GR console he'd installed one of the Kilduff shifters and raves about how great it is. So I bit the bullet and ordered one along with the wiring harness from Sound German....

Not sure just yet when I'm going to attempt this swap but I should have all my parts needed soon. So if I have a good trip back east and then the forum GTG I might attempt it after I return but not before I fix my daughters Jeep.... That way once I'm done with hers I could take her up into the woods and start teaching her all the stuff I don't know.... It'll be a learning experience for us both... Me relearning my wheelin skills and her learning how to wheel.

Not that it matter right now as I wasn't planning on doing this swap until later but as usual FedEx is being a little bitch.... The wiring harness is only coming from Seattle & I'd offered to forgo the shipping and just picking the wiring harness up on my next appointment over to the VA in January when I'm picking up my new chompers... But Russel from Sound German said he preferred to ship the wiring harness. This is a side gig for him and he doesn't have a brick & mortar place for his business so I understand... Well the harness was originally slated to arrive tomorrow but due to all the rain/flooding they have now delayed delivery and don't have a date set yet.
Now YES I'd gotten stuck over on the wetside last Wednesday but those issues have been fixed and last I looked there wasn't any other road delays. My rant is more about the fact that FedEx & at time UPS use the excuse of weather as a delay excuse. Most of the time it's during the winter when it's snowed but what chaps my ass is that even if you'd paid for expedited service and then they delay delivery they won't offer any type of refund or credit.....
The harness wasn't coming expedited but it's still just annoying to me. Plus he's got Signature Required on the harness which means I've got to be available now whenever they finally give me a delivery date.

OK rant off....

Been there done that..... .they all suck.

I know a long stretch of 167 is closed due to flooding. Not making excuses for them, they all suck.

Yes and parts of Hwy 2 & Hwy 97 too...

But he's located in Bellevue.. So the package according to tracking went to Seattle before going to Yakima and then gets delivered here... Last I'd looked I-90 is open and I don't think 167 should play into this in any way.
