Confused on what these rubber connectors go to?

Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting on the forums so I hope I’m doing this correctly.

I tried to look around to see if someone had posted this before but couldn’t find anything.

I just recently bought a jeep wrangler 98 with the 2.5 engine. It’s cranking but not starting.

But my question here is I was under my Jeep and I noticed a cable coming from my front axel and it doesn’t connect to anything? (Please see first picture attached) does this connect to anything or is this something the previous owner left?

Also I found another rubber cable coming from the transfer case that was shoved into the frame and isn’t connected to anything except this spot on the transfer case. ( See attached pictures)

If anyone knows what these go to I would really appreciate it.

This is my first time really working this much into a vehicle and I want to learn more about maintenance them.

That's your diff vent. Usually attaches up on the drivers side of the radiator.

Thank you so much. I didn’t know the diff even needed ventilation. Do you perhaps know what the rubber cable coming from the transmission in the two other pictures goes too?

The diffs, trans and T case all need breathers, for a total of 4 rubber lines. Oil and parts heats up and expand, no vent and the seals will get blown out, and you'll have a oily mess. All of them typically have a spring loaded breather on the end of the rubber line to prevent water/dirt intrusion. I bought a bag or 4 for like $10 off scamazon a couple years ago but now I see they are like $8 a piece. Gotta keep china rolling I guess.

Thank you for explaining this. I didn’t know that any of these parts needed breathers. I bought this jeep from someone who never finished fixing some of the issues so I had a bunch of cables and line just left hanging and had no idea where some of them went.

Thank you again for the explanation!

FYSA my 97 4.0 only has three breathers...front and rear differential and transfer case.

Just about all the rubber hoses and items in your Jeep are 25+ years old. Things like motor and transmission mounts, suspension bushings and even the crank pulley all probably need replacement or at least inspection.

Yeah I've started making a list of rubber components and item I know I will need to replace as it looks like to me a lot of component are orginal.

I'm currently working on trying to get the Jeep to start, I can hear it trying to start but I'm not sure why its not turning over so I've got some parts on order right now trying to see if it will start finally.

I do know the crank pulley will need to be replaced but for now it looks fine.

Thank you for the heads up though!

Spray some starting fluid in the throttle body. If it barks off then it's fuel...check fuel pressure. If it doesn't do anything then it's spark...check the ASD relay and plugs, coil.

Always check grounds.

Checked all of this and nothing seemed wrong until I checked the fuses again and one fuse was broken. I replaced it and it finally started up and is runnning.....

Sometimes I need to triple check fuses I guess but thank you for the advice of checking the other components.
