I read through the beginning of this thread almost a year ago, admiring everyone’s two-wheel stories and pictures. Little did I know I would be making my entry now, but here it goes!
Up to a couple months ago, I didn’t have much experience on motorcycles at all, but I recently took the opportunity to join some friends for a ride on the Sandstone trail in Kisatchie National Forest in central LA. Lots of rolling hills, sugar-sand beds, rocks, and hard pack dirt made for a fun trail.
The borrowed bike I was on, however, is a 150cc Honda XR with very smooth all-terrain tires. Other than the sand wiping me out a couple of times, I and the bike did pretty well. I have years of experience mountain biking which REALLY helped with body positioning, line choice, and confidence off-road on two wheels. Well, I found out what all the
motorized two-wheel fuss is all about - it was a blast!
After perusing Marketplace for several weeks, I found a deal I couldn’t pass up - a 2015 Yamaha YZ250F in great condition for $2500. And it was just my luck to be the first one there early Saturday morning to look at the bike. A few hours later and it was home!

Now, I did not realize just how much faster a 250cc race bike is than a 150cc adventure bike. This thing is SCARY fast. The front tire is very happy to leave the ground. I’ve only put a few yard hours on it, but I’m eager to go back to the Sandstone trail and have another go at it!
Needless to say, this is way more bike than I can currently handle at my skill level, so I’m also getting some proper protective gear and taking it easy while I’m still learning and growing into it.
